Question about Tappan MPF500PBW Gas Kitchen Range

Open Question

Hi i have a Tappan stove model # TGF317ESC and the top stove burners work fine, but the oven doesn't work all the time. We will turn the oven on and it won't come on. The pilot ignitor glows but oven won't come on, sometimes for hours. Then i'll turn it off for a little while, try again and then sometimes it works. Would like to know what you think the problem is.

The pilot adjustment screw is located on the back side of the oven temperature thermostat. Lift the cook top to access it. Use a flat screwdriver to adjust... counter clockwise= bigger flame.

SOURCE: tappan oven ignitor glows but oven doesn't light

There must be a MINIMUM of 2.9 amps at the ignitor to work correctly to bring on the gas valve. Less than 2.9 replace the ignitor. More than 2.9 replace the gas valve.

SOURCE: our tappan oven won't light. the pilot element

Either the safety valve is stuck or the ignitor is weak. While the ignitor is glowing. use the handle of a large screwdriver to tap on the valve body. If it lights replace the ignitor. If it does not light replace both the ignitor and the safety valve.

Hi an welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

If nothing lights... i.e burner or oven there are only 2 things that can cause this problem. A failed ignition module or a wiring problem. The wiring problem can be a simple short or a broken power lead. All of the stove top ignitors are in a series parallel connection and if one of the burmer control shorts you loose the stove top. With nothing is lighting oven and burners it sure points toward the ignition module or power to the module.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Kelly

Note... The ignition module itself is not cheap.

You have to light burners on stovetop with a match all the time.

The pilots for the range top are beneath the top of the range top. YOu will see them if they are there. YOu stove may use electronic ignition and you can hear the sparking when you turn the knob to the "light" position.

If it is electronic ignition, make sure the stove is plugged into an operating outlet

Tappan TGFS26C, Oven igniter not even

Lets take the oven problem first. Sounds like you have a Hot Surface Ignitor problem. This is the device that glows and lights the burner. You can buy a universal ignitor at most appliance or heating and air conditioning supply houses. Note carefully how the old one is mounted. You may have to make some adjustments to mount the new ignitor, but it MUST be close to the gas burner like the old one! You don't smell gas because the gas valve will not open until the ignitor is hot. All ignitors work with the same voltage, so simply connect the new wires to the old ones.

I'm not certain if you have a standing pilot for the stove top burners or electronic ignition. Remove the top panel to check. If you have a gas pilot, relight it. If electronic ignition, clean the ignitors. If that does not solve the problem you may have to call a technician, as these systems can be complex.

Hope this helps.
