Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

My ps3 as suffered the ylod, i did the reflow and it worked. about a week later with no more than 3 hours of game play it did it again, so i did the reflow again but this time, when i switched it on i got a lot of dots on the screen, as if it wasnt tuned in properly. i tried to reset the display settings by holding the power button and waiting for th beeps but nothing came up, then after a couple of days of trying i noticed that the ps3 was getting very hot very quickly. i did the fan test to see if that worked, which the fan came on, and now its gone back to the ylod. Could you help me.

SOURCE: ps3 freezes at startup screen/ green red dots/lines,

Turn off the PS3 with the switch on the back, then turn back on. wait till the light is solid red then hold your finger on the start button for abount 10 seconds until you hear it beep twice.

It will then ask you to connect a controller via the usb cable and press the PS button. Once you do this it will bring up the reset menu.

Unfortunately the only way I found that solves this is a full system restore that wipes the hard drive completely.

You do however retain and data saved online such as COD stats etc and playstation store purchases with your PSN.

Hope this helps??

SOURCE: Playstation 3 Does not display on TV using HDMI or regular video

I posted to your problem with a similar one. I was able to get my PS3 to work by:

1.) Powering down both the PS3 and ViewSonic LCD
2.) Unplugging the power cables to both PS3 and LCD
3.) Waiting at least 10 or more seconds
4.) Plugging in the power cables to both PS3 and LCD
5.) Turning on the ViewSonic LCD
6.) Turning on the PS3 and holding down the power button until the beep

After this sequence I heard the bootup audio and the menu appeared on the screen- which detected the HDMI connection to my LCD.

Very odd.. I've had my PS3 in the same place for months and just today this happened.

I wanted to post my success. Best of luck!

How to fix my playstation in order to get it on again?

whats wrong with it? If it turns on and the flashes yellow you have the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death).

You can temporarily fix this using a hairdryer but it may not even work. This is called a "reflow" i believe and you can google on how to do it but it will take roughly an hour to do and may only last a week if even. It may not even fix it at all.

You can send it to be repaired where it is "Reballed" which may fix it indefinitely. This depends on how good of a job the repair was. It may last a year it may last 2 years even 3 or 4 as to what some people have told me. I live in Ireland and it is on average 60 euro to get a YLOD ps3 reballed.

Your last option is just sending it to sony and they will offer a replacement for 100 euro. It wont be the same ps3 but it will be a working ps3.

I hope this helps. What i have said is only if it is the YLOD im not sure about anything else. :)

The PS3 freezes and then shuts down, tried all the trouble shooting ideas from manuel and not working. ie cleaned and vacumed the outside of the console re-booted it, let it sit for a few days and tried...

It maybe the start of the yellow light of death (YLOD). If it's within warranty take it back for a repair. If not your machine could be in for a bit of open heart surgery. This happened to my machine a few months ago I then searched the web for a cure. I ended up opening my machine and performing a Reflow on the motherboard. If you're technical or know someone who likes taking things apart you can do this yourself in an hour. Go to this website for info MIC-B.COM. Then go to REPAIRS - MOST POPULAR ARTICLES - PS3 YLOD DIY REFLOW. Follow the online steps and hopefully your machine will burst back into life.
Best of luck...

Formula 1 2010 is freezing up on start up. Other games are working on console and the Formula 1 game is working on another PS3 console.

I can confidently say your ps3 is about to go YLOD, nothing really that you can do about it, if you wanna continue to use it you will have to do a reflow with a heat gun which is a very delicate process, I would advice you to sell it after doing the reflow and let the person buying know about the impending problem since it is a recurring one, go on youtube and search for "Gilksy ps3 reflow", Hope this helps

I repaired my Dad's PS3 (YLOD) by heating up the CPU & GPU then putting some Artic Silver on the processors. It worked. So I decided I was going to buy someones broken (YLOD) PS3 for about $40 I did...

Ok first the heating up. You may find that the reflow did not quite get hot enough to melt the solder back onto the ball grid arrays enough. You could try another reflow and see if this works however every time you do a reflow you risk permanently damaging the CPU/GPU. The other thing you could try is bending the heat sink clamps a little to apply more pressure on the CPU/GPU but again this could cause more damage.

Secondly the display. If this reset sequence does not work then you have probably damaged the GPU in the reflow process :-

Step 1. Turn the PS3 off into standby (red light on)

Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it and then about 5 seconds later it will beep again. Let go of the power button when you hear this second beep.

Step 3. Wait for your PS3 to start.

This solution basically resets the video output back to standard definition.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

Thank You..... Thank You... Thank you.. for answering your own question :) I was going through the exact same thing and couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Only difference was this was only my second re-flow. I know I did everything perfect too. Because like you mine last 6-8 month's. Not two weeks some some who don't put the added tlc needed. After reading your solution I noticed that because of the way that ribbon bends. Some of the beads were protruding from the ribbon. So I pushed them down with a plastic fork prong so I wouldn't rip it. Then flipped the ribbon so it wouldn't bend over the end again. Thank you again Chilled....

You have YLOD you have to open and strip the ps3 down to motherboard then either reball the GPU/CPU (this method requires experience with circuit boards) or reflow the the solder around the chipsets using a heat gun, if you feel you can do the later I will give you more detailed instructions if you want.

This is what is known as the yellow light of death, or ylod. You will have to get the board reflowed to fix this problem or send it to sony to fix.

Ps3 is quitting by itself

Your system has overheated. The thermal compound has heated and moved away from the CPU/GPU and the heat sync keep the heat from being dissipated via the heat sync. Eventually you will get the YLOD which is the equivalent of the Xbox 360 RROD. This is due to heat sysnc problems. Your CPU and GPU will more than likely need to be reflowed. I got the YLOD on my PS3 around the first of March 09. I also fixed my PS3 in about an hour. I have had no problems since. You can slow the YLOD but i dont believe it can be stopped. It seems it will eventually happen to all PS3's. One tip do not stand the PS3 on its side keep flat. This will help keep the thermal compound from moving as much when it heats up.
