When I try to turn the camera on, the lens pops in and out a few times, then closes. The screen says "lens error."

Seems pretty obvious that this camera has a fault that requires a return under warranty. If it is out of warranty, then it is probably not economic to get it repaired, but I cannot be sure because you don't say what model Nikon it is. Sounds like a fairly low end model that you would be better off just replacing (I don't think the top models have lenses that "pop out").

Lens opens then closes, a few times then error message

no you shouldnt repair it yourself it will only make it worse, the lense have become disalligned it can be repaired for you and that is the best option. you can also try gently pulling and twisting the end of the lense and i mean gentle dont twist and pull till it pops. once you have done this switch it off and on and it may have worked to allign the lenses.

Cyber SHot DSC-W80 lens will not close.

Your lens is jammed. Odds are it's unrepairable, but as a last ditch effort try GENTLY wiggling/twisting the lens as you attempt to power down or on.

Cannot reset camera

I was having the exact same problem. The screen would turn red and i would get an error message. I realized the lens lid stayed open even when the camera shut itself off. I hit the corner of the camera a few times (the side with the lens) until the lens lid shut. Then I tried to turn on the camera and it worked!

Lens Stuck

Same problem guys!!! LENS HAD GOT STUCK - ABOUT ONE THIRD OUT after a knock. After lots of playing, and tapping and batteries in and out tried the whole twisting and pulling thing whilst turning off and on.

After a few minutes it came free and whole lens popped out. I then had to twist the outer part of the lens to straighten that up and allow it to fully retract. Works a treat now!

PS Tried the Sony online chat support - useless!!!!
