Question about Brother Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

My Brother MFC 9840CDW recently started producing copies with random, mutli-colored streaks on the far right side of each page. Any thoughts as to what the cause may be? Much Thanks! Ben

    Nonontech,

Thanks for your input. I've tried everything you suggested except taking the fuser apart to clean it. I did, however, take the fuser out and clean the roller with alcohol. After reassembling everything and testing my problem is now noticeably worse than before. What are your thought please? Thanks Nonontech!

There are few possibilities, 1. Leaking Cartridges, 2, Waste Ink Tank on the drum is full, 3, Fuser unit, 4. Dirty Paper passage (splattered toner).

First remove all the papers, cartridges, drum and the fuser unit, inspect all the cartridges and clean them (the drum bars) with a light/soft feather, be careful while doing this and don't ever touch them with your hand.

Next clean the drum, instructions here (click here)

After they are cleaned, remove the front tray, get a blower or an air can and blow the passage from front to back and vice versa with the blower. Clean all the chips on the cartridges and on the drum. Do whatever you think is good and might be helpful.

Also clean the fuser and the maintenance kit (inside the fuser), wipe away all the wasted/stuck toner powder and reseat it properly.

Once everything is done, install all the components. Now try printing, if the problem persists, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I am afraid.. it seems you've made a small mistake when you say "...clean the rollers with alcohol..". Actually, you shouldn't clean the roller with anything, instead with a soft cloth or a brush. Even water isn't recommended and most of all Oil could damage them permanently. They look simple and ordinary, but there are number of pores (tiny holes). I also have a little doubt about this roller, do you mean the long bar that extends the length of the fuser? If it is, there's another greater problem. It shouldn't be cleaned that way, but only with brush or feather.

Well, done is done, we have to go ahead. When I refer to your reply, the problem is most likely with the Fuser since the problem worsens after cleaning the roller(s). From your end, you can only disassemble the unit and make sure everything is cleaned (once again), but this time, don't ever use any solution but only with a soft cloth. Do not open the unit if the printer is not left Off for at least 30 minutes, you may damage the components and you know it's hot enough to burn your hair...:-)

After cleaning all the fuser components properly re-assemble it and reinstall. If this isn't successful, your last second option is replacing the Fuser and your Final option is "Contact Brother". I hope you understand.

Once again Good luck and let me know if you need further help from my side.

MFC-9840 printing Yellow/Red/Blue strips in background. Any ideas why?

This is caused mainly by leaving the Corona Wire sliders anywhere other than where the arrows on the slider meets the arrows on the Drum Units. This leaves solid lines of colour down the length of the page (one per colour with the slider in the wrong place) if it is leaving more than the single line on the page it is probably leaking cartridges.

These particular cartridges are known for their ability to leak badly (OEM and Remanufactured cartridges do it). The only option for a leaking cartridge is to replace it and clean out the machine with a lint free cloth preferably a 'Toner Grabber' cloth. If you nee one of the toner grabber cloths then talk to your local cartridge refilling place for one. If they refil toner cartridges there then they probably have them or can suggest a different option.

MFC-9440 CN Laser Printer is producing vertical color line streak

Colored vertical streaks - looks like a transfer belt problem, and it's not user fixable. You may need a new belt unit - you can find it for around US$ 80-120, but you may want to have a technician inspect the unit first, since it could arguably be the drum instead, and you don't want to fork around US$ 100 and replace the wrong part.
You can try showing a printer sample at a print shop; by looking at the streaks it is possible to diagnose drum, fuser or belt problems.
Here you find a much more detailed page, for another printer model, but the issues are mainly the same for most color printers:

Getting horizontal red streaks across printed page

The drum roller is damaged. You must be careful and spin the cylinder. do not touch the roller. You probably have a line in the roller that causes this issue. Each time i have seen this problem, this was the cause.

Right side of every page has pink strip down page

Either your magenta cartridge is leaking out of the right corner or you have a defective magenta drum.
(maybe it got scratched when changing the cartridge?) If it's the magenta drum, you have to replace all the drums since they come in one unit. OEM part only.

My drum is at 40%. I have black vertical streaks

I was going crazy! Had a tech come in and look at the machine - needless to say he did NOTHING! A friend came over and was trying different things. It was that the "rack" that the toner cartridges sit in was not fully seated - once he pushed down a little and heard it "click" I had no more black streaks. AMAZING

MFC-9840 prints vertical stripe ~2" from right edge on all color printouts

Hi,
The first thing i would try to do is clean the corona wire on the drum unit. It might also be a faulty magenta cartridge.
