You can listen to trunked police bands UNLESS: 1 they went Digital and your scanner is Analog. 2. They use an encrypted control frequency. 3. It is not against the law in your area. 4. you have a Trunked scanner. Following trunked frequencies requires a trunked scanner which is very different from regular everyday scanners. If the photo of your scanner is accurate then it appears you have Digital capability so that won't be a problem. You can go to Radio shack and purchase a book on Public Safety frequencies and Control Frequencies which will give you the proper frequency range but they will tell you nothing about Encryption on any Frequency. If you can not find a Control Frequency then you will not be able to track the hoping that is used in a trunked system. By the way, a Regular scanner runs about $50 where as a Trunked Scanner runs $150 to $200.

Simplified response: No, you cannot listen to trunked systems using the BC72XLT. It's a conventional scanner only. For detailed information on active frequencies and systems in your area, and a lot of other useful scanning information, visit:

Yes and for most scanning of Police and fire frequencies is ok, unfortunately the Criminal Element has started doing this. It is unfortunate that a few bad apples have to mess it up for the rest. The Simplified response is correct. Most major Departments are going digital and encrypting the Control Frequency to stop people from listening in because of this. The life of an officer and officer safety out way the needs of the few in this case. This is unfortunate but a necessary change and the price we pay for security.

I cant listen to the police

First, make sure that you have the correct frequency for your local police. You can find a comprehensive database of active frequencies in your area by visiting:
www.Reference.com

Program the frequency or frequencies using the instructions in the scanner's operating manual. and you should be all set. If you need the manual, you can download and print it, at no cost, here:
http://www.uniden.com/pdf/BC60XLT-1om.pdf

NOTE: If the frequency database shows that your local police are using a trunked system, you will not be able to monitor them using the BC60XLT-1. Trunked systems require a trunking scanner. Many law enforcement agencies are also using digital systems for their communications. If that's the case in your area you'll need a scanner capable of monitoring APCO-25 digital transmissions.

How to receive dispatch reception on uniden bc72xlt

Most dispatch communications in and around major metropolitan areas are now handled via trunked radio systems which your BC72XLT is not capable of monitoring. Some dispatch, especially fire and EMS, should be available to you, and possibly some police activity. For a comprehensive database of active frequencies and services in your area, visit:

For an extensive database of active frequencies and systems in your area visit
www.RadioReference.com
or
www.CityFreq.com

If your local PD is using a trunked or digital system you will not be able to monitor them with the BC72XLT.

In case you need information on the programming itself, here's a link to the manual for your scanner:
