Question about Hobart A200 Stand Mixer

1 Answer

Hobart h400 G'day, great to see your back! I bought a h400 40 quart mixer off a mate , he bought it new in 1991, and I believe shortly after that hobart stopped making them. It is a 1ph machine. My freind had it overhauled , geatbox stripped down, new bearing and seals fitted to gear box ,and a short time afterwards the mixer stopped , greaseAny assia had pushed its through the electric motor front bearing and all into the motor! It blew one of the capacitors. I can email photos if you like. the machine is a grease gearbox type as there is no sight glass on the machine to check the oil level. the grrease in the gearbox seems to be half oil /half grease , we don't know how full it was filled . On the electric drive shaft there was from the front a circlip holding the spiral gear in place ,then a couple sets of spring washers , followed by an aluminium washer about 32mm in diameter. is there any sort of grease deflector or seal that is missing? When we reassemble it whats to stop it happening again? By the way we pulled apart the electric motor and have cleaned out the grease , we are hopong that it can be saved. the machine was bought new in Australia by my friend . The Australian Hobart people have been very helpful , but they say their manuals don't show a seal.] Any assistance you can give would be appreciated, cheers Greg

What is the difference between a H800 and L800 mixer

I have used the H600. Nice piece of kitchen kit for hard use.

Model H600 is a heavy-duty 60-quart mixer which features a two-horsepower motor, a timer and a #12
Attachment Hub as standard equipment. With the use of bowl adapters and special agitators, 30- or 40-
quart bowls may be used on the H600.

Model L800 is a medium-duty 80-quart mixer designed primarily for use in general kitchen applications.
This mixer features a timer and #12 Attachment Hub as standard equipment and is powered by a
two-horsepower motor. With the use of bowl adapters and special agitators, 30-, 40- or 60- quart bowls
may be used on the L800.

A Bowl Guard is standard equipment on all H600 and L800 models.

A programmable timer controller is optional on H600 and L800 models.

These mixers can be ordered with a stainless steel finish.
A variety of attachments and accessories are available for all mixers. These are described in a separate Use and Applications Handbook, which is furnished with each mixer.

Switch held unit works, release switch unit doen't work

Since you did not provide the exact model number for your unit I cannot give you much precise detailed assistance. However most Hobart mixers are fitted with a standard power switch and you should not have to hold it in position for the unit to work. The switch on your unit likely just needs to be replaced with a new one.

I bought a used Hobart A200 20 quart stand mixer that hesitates or 'gets stuck' when mixing dough or other thick (hard to mix) material. When running without a load, or only a light load it doesn't stick...

First of all, I want to say that it is common for people to overload the A200 mixer when mixing dough. The owner's manual gives an extensive chart for various substances typical of what people may mix. Depending on the consistency of the dough, the maximum batch size varies, but as an example: 9 lbs. max with 40% absorption ratio thin pizza dough, 1st gear only, 5 minutes maximum mix time. I remember this particular batch size/specification because as a technician who works on these mixers frequently, I had a customer attempting to mix 20+ lbs. of that 40% pizza dough for much more than 5 minutes and didn't understand why the mixer would stall and why his mixer was so hot he could nearly cook eggs on it's transmission case. So, a word of caution (9 lbs. at 40% A.R. is approx. 7 lbs. flour, plus the water) about overloading these. If used to mix reasonable batches, they are excellent mixers and will last a lifetime (I regularly service 40-50 year old A200 model mixers that run very well).

If you don't hear any grinding when it's stalled (which would indicated stripped gears, damaged keys, etc. in the transmission) I would say you are overloading it. Many people want to say the motor is weak when the mixer stalls, but unless the motor has been repeatedly and severely overheated to the point of shorting some of the motor's windings, that's not the case. I suggest finding the recommended capacity chart from Hobart and abiding by it and you'll love your new mixer for years.

Which is the better mixer of these old models: K5A K5-A or K45 SS and what is the difference? KITCHENAID HOBART K5A K5-A 300 WATT MIXER and the KitchenAid Hobart Vintage K45 250 WATT. Thank you

Hello ajlina,

All of these are great home use units, all the attachments are interchangeable between these. The difference between these mixers is the K5 is a 5 quart mixer and the K45 is a 4.5 quart mixer. As I own both of them they are great in the kitchen and have the same durability.

Have any more questions please post to this thread and I will be happy to assist. Thank you for using FixYa.

We just got a 6 quart kitchenaid mixer, we have used it once and the loud high pitched sound is very irritating. Is this a problem that will go away in a short time, or do we send it back for repairs? Our...

Hi Wayne. If you want to keep the mixer, you'll have to buy some earplugs. Newer Kitchenaid mixers are all that noisy. The best thing that I can say about them, is that they've got great paint jobs. If you do keep the mixer, other revelations may occur later when the plastic transmission housing fails and possibly ruins your mixer. These units are poorly manufactured in my opinion. I know because I've been through my own Kitchenaid mixer rebuild. I recommend that you return it and consider an Electrolux DLX. My own solution was to buy a used commercial Hobart mixer and rebuild it. I am once again a happy man!

Good luck! ricardok45
