Question about Cobra PR-245/2 (7 Channels) 2-Way Radio

1 Answer

Cobra MT800 I have just been given a pair of Cobra MT800 which are I think similar to the PR-245. I need to turn off the Call sound so as not to alarm animals and birds that I photograph. Does anyione know a way of turning off the Call button sounds on both handsets? Thank you.

    Thank you but it is the actual 'Call' on my MT800 that I wish to turn off so that the other person does not make my handset alert the birds/animals. Can it be done? Thank you for your time.

    Hello again SSPD12,

    Are you talking about the "Call" tone or the "Roger Beep" tone? The call tone should only be sent when you press the CALL button on one of the radios. This will cause the radio to transmit a two second beep to the other radio. There is no way to disable this function perse, but the tone should not be heard on every transmission, only when the other user presses the CALL key.

    By comparison the Roger Beep function sends a tone on every transmission at the end of the transmission. This tone is supposed to alert the other user that you are done talking and they can begin their transmission. The Roger Beep can be disabled:

    1. Press the MODE button until the ROGER BEEP icon on the display flashes.
    2. Press UP or DOWN to select the desired setting (either On or Off).
    3. Press MODE again to save or simply wait 15 seconds.

    Best Regards

Hi, I have a pair of PR 385 hand helds, could anybody tell me if any other battery packs from any other model Cobra fit my radios. I,ve searched and can't find a specific pack for the 385. If you

I realize this is a bit late, but I have to comment. When I viewed this page there were two responses to the original query (one that I also have).
It is terribly painful to have had to read them because they are both so sincere in their desire to help and so clueless in their response. The original poster asked about replacement batteries for the Cobra PR385 2-way radio. Both respondents posted about a DIFFERENT model. The first I can understand the mixup, he posted about the PR3850wx, If you don't mind the extra 0wx at the end then it is all fine. The second posted about the LI 7200 wx??? What??
Please, we all want help, but check your information before you post your response. The Cobra PR385 radios use the FA_NICD battery pack at 4.8v and 300mAh.
I did just find a source for batteries if anyone is in need:

I have not tried either of these shops but will be ordering shortly.

Hi SSPD12,

Another potential "fix" for the problem that occurs to me is this: if you are not able to turn off the "call" tone you are referring to, you might be to solve the issue by purchasing a headset or earphone for the radio and using that when you are in the field. This would solve the problem because only you would hear the tone while you are wearing the headset.

Just another option for you to consider..

Cobra pr250 2 way radios

Pls verify that both radios are:
1. within range of each other;
2. channel selection is identical;
3. CTCSS Privacy Code is identical;
4. Call Tone is identical;
5. Receive icon appears when the other radio's PTT is pressed;
6. Auto Squelch/Max Range is set to receive even weak signals.
Please correct settings if needed.

In some cases, it is the internal speakers that goes bad.

Hope this be of help/idea. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

I don't know this radio individually, but heres the common thing that happens:
Sounds to me like the 8 volt regulator chip has blown after overvoltage. I expect the power supply has gone too, putting 18+ volts into the radio.
Repair the power supply. (Check its 13-13.8 Volts).
Then check the regulator (7808) is putting out anything, should be middle pin ground then 13V one side and 8V the other, if nothing, its blown. Replace it if gone.
Hopefully thats all thats gone and it should work again.

Brand New Cobra microtalk won't work!

Double check against all the instructions - in particular, make sure the batteries are charged according to "before first use" spec, that the volume is turned up, and that the squelch (if fitted and not automatic) is adjusted properly. If it still doesn't work, take it back to Wal-Mart. If the product doesn't work, there's no need for the packaging to be in good condition - it's not as if they'll be needing it to resell the goods to anybody else. A.
