Question about Toshiba REGZA 42 in. Flat-Panel LCD HDTV
If I understand this correctly, you see vertical lines on the right side that show video content from the left side. This is caused by a failure in the video memory addressing. Unless a dying power supply capacitor is causing the digital logic to misbehave, the main board probably needs one of the following replaced: video processor, video memory controller, or one of the video memory chips. It might also be a vertical line address decoder on the LCD panel driver board. The blurriness might be caused by fault currents in the bad chip.
First check the power supply with an oscilloscope to make sure it's clean. Anybody who knows how to use an oscilloscope without getting killed by probing in the wrong place should be able to do this.
It's probably easiest to swap the main board for a refurbished one. If you want to do it yourself, first do some research on anti-static protection so you don't damage the new board with static electricity. You don't want to do more damage to the old board either; that will reduce its core charge credit value. If you need a how-to guide on this, post a request for it.
Bottom line: the set needs repair, but it is repairable. Best case is a bad capacitor in the power supply. These range in price from $0.30 to $3.00 plus shipping and handling. Worst case is a new main board or LCD panel driver board (probably $130-$300). Labor for the power supply or main board cases should be no more than two hours, probably more like one. A panel driver fault may be considerably more expensive; it is often necessary to almost completely disassemble the set to get at it.
