Need help installing belt on Hoover self propelled upright vacuum

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover Ultra U6430-900 Wind Tunnel Bagged Upright. The best way to install the belt on a Hoover to replace one or both of the belts @ the same time for the best cleaning. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months for best results. There is a tool that looks like a screwdriver that has a right or left angle on the end that serves as a belt puller and to hook the belt(s) onto the brushroll 1st and then take your puller and then pull or stretch the belt onto the motor pulley. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Brush won't turn and self propel doesn't work (by 2 users)
Posted by brucelk on May 24, 2008
I have replaced both the v-belt and the larger belt with Hoover brand belts and the brushes still don't turn properly and the self-propel function doesn't work. It seems that when I lower the handle all the way down toward the floor it works fine, but no one can vacuum this way. Is there an adjustment to belts to tighten them up? Otherwise I have to get it in to the only repair shop in town which is an hour's drive.X

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover U6437-900 / U6439-900 Windtunnel Vacuum. It is not so much the belts, the 2 belts are only part of the solution. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months as a rule and to change them @ the same time. The Hoover Self-Propelled works on when the handle is lower to a comfortable position then the self-propelled drive may just need and adjustment. There is a self-propelled rod that controls the self-propelled feature and it either needs adjustment or replacement or the part that hold it may be broken but either one can be fixed. SOURCE: Hoover WindTunnel Self-Propelled V Belt

Hi, That is what was happening to my Windtunnel. Until I looked at the little round disk "plastic". there was a crack in it and this puts pressure onto that V belt to make the brush spin. I have a replacement idler arm assy unit which has to be replaced. I hope this helps Cindy G.

U6485-900 WindTunnel Self-Propelled I changed the belts but there is not enough tension on the brush drive belt to get it to rotate

I had the exact same problem with my Hoover U6485-900 Anniversary upright, self propelled, vacuum. It would move backwards and forwards, had good vacuum, but wouldn't pick up much because the brush/roller was not turning very well. I replaced the main drive belt (38528035) and it now works great. The old belt had stretched and was slipping under load. Thanks for the great suggestions.

Replace belt on hoover vacuum U4655

Turn the machine over and remove the 4 screws which hold the cover on the brush. Remove the cover and brush roller. Remove old belt. Slide new belt over the motor pulley, first. Then slide roller through new belt (if self propelled model, slide roller through the small belt, also) and slide brush roller into slots on housing (note: slots are different, match roller sides to correct slot.)

Why is self propelled not working on my hoover windtunnel

Hi there SmartAlec from Nelsonvacuums.com.au here. Actually the brush belt needs to be tight as well for the self propell function to work. However once you change that if it is still not working it could be the drive mechanism itself. You can test this by laying the vacuum flat on its belly so you can see the brushes. Turn it on and push the handle down (as if you were actually vacuuming). This should get your drive wheels going they are two wheels about 3 inches away from your brushes. If they are not turning then you need a new drive mechanism. If you are in australia i can get you one through our website above.
Hope this helps. Happy Vacuuming :)

How do you change the belts on a hoover wind tunnel vaccuum

Flip the vacuum over push the pedal so the vacuum lays flat on the floor or table. Remove the four silver screws at all four corners of the brush area. Pull up on the plastic cover and remaove it. Lift the brush out towards you if this is a self propelled unit there will be two belts one will stretch one won't the non stretch belt rarely needs to be replaced and usually indicates another problem. Take a new stretch belt and loop it around the metal shaft and then the brush roll use two hands to push the brush back into position give it a spin to make sure everything is spinning freely then replace the cover. In the case of a self propelled model the stretch belt spans the metal shaft and one of the drive wheels. For belts, bags or questions visit www.stevessewandvac.com

Brush roll wont turn

Might be that the the idler wheel is stuck and not engaging the V belt. If you look down just past the V belt you will see a black roller, it needs to be against the belt. It is either stuck or the asm. is broken.

BELT TO THE BRUSH SEEMS TOO LOOSE EVEN WHEN REPLACED

Hoover U6437-900 U6439-900 Upright
LOOSE BELT. THE BELT IS STILL LOOSE EVEN AFTER REPLACING

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
The reason it seems like the belt is too big is probable correct, you may have the wrong size belt for your vacuum, use genuine belts – your particular model is a self propelled model and takes two (2) belts and they should stretch on very tightly and snug and it is smart to use the genuine belt package for the model that you have and we Recommended the belt change for flat belt(s) are 4 to 6 months for better cleaning
They should be tight on the belt pulleys in order to do the best cleaning – use genuine belts

The flat belt is the problem, it has to be tight so it can turn the drive and also the pulley for the V belt.
