One way to know if you have Integrated Audio, is to see if the speakers plug into audio ports on the motherboard.
The Asus P4GE-MX does have audio ports on the motherboard.

(Integrated is also known as OnBoard. ON the motherBOARD.
The device chip is soldered to the motherboard.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit )

Asus Support > P4GE-MX

http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=JdzKwFSqhlt5OPiW

Click on the Specifications tab.

Audio - ALC655
6 - Channel Codec

You need to download the Driver file, and install it. (Device driver)

(A Device Driver is a small piece of software that allows the O/S to 'communicate' with the device, and vice-versa, and also programs that utilize that device.
O/S = Operating System. One example is Windows XP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_driver )

Click on the Downloads tab.
Now click on the + sign to left of Audio (1)
Click on Global (DLM) or China. I suggest Do Not click on P2P

Type the characters you see in the Captcha box. (Letters/Numbers. For letters be SURE to put CAPITAL letters)
Click on Submit.

[ If you want the Motherboard Manual for your P4GE-MX, click on the Downloads tab.
{It will state 0 files found}

Then to the right of the Operating System box, click on the blue Down Arrow.
Now click on WinXP.
{Doesn't matter WHAT O/S you're running, a motherboard manual IS A motherboard manual.
Asus, sheesh!}

Now click on the + sign to the left of Manual (5)
Go down the list until you come to the heading -
Version E1862

Now click on Global (DLM) or China. (I'm in the USA, and have better luck with the China server)
Type the letters/numbers you see in the Captcha box. (Use CAPITAL letters!)
Click on Submit ]

NOT ACTIVE AUDIO WINDOWS XP.....WHAT THIS IS SOLUTION ASUS P5KPL-AM SE

Click Start, click Control Panel, double-click System, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. 18abb370-ac1e-4b6b-b663-e028a75bf05b.jpg If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Double-click Sound, video and game controllers to expand that category. If a sound card is listed, you have one installed. If no sound card is listed, check the information that came with your computer to see if there's supposed to be a sound card installed. If there should be a sound card installed, you'll need to install one.If you think you have a sound card installed, but you don't see it under the Sound, video and game controllers category, expand the Other devices category and check any devices listed there.Laptops don't usually have sound cards. Instead, they have integrated sound processors, which appear in the same category in Device Manager.

If there's a yellow question mark next to the name of the sound card in Device Manager, there might be a problem.

  1. Right-click the name of the sound card, and then click Properties.

  2. Click the General tab, and then look in the Device status box to identify problems with the sound card.

  3. Although most speakers have a volume control, you can control the overall level of sound using Windows.

    1. Open Volume Control by clicking the Start button 4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33.png, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then, under Audio Devices and Sound, clicking Adjust system volume.

    2. Under Main Volume, move the slider up or down to raise or lower the volume.
