Hey all... just upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro with SP3 - needed the added security for work, despite the fact that this laptop is ancient and should be replaced.
However on reinstalling Windows my optical drive no longer appears under 'My Computer' - I have to use a paper clip in the manual release hole to even get the drive open and get the XP install disc out.
I'm clueless and haven't found any hints online for this kinda issue yet. Any ideas?

Click on the guided help. It will reset the registry filters that are causing the drive not to show up.
