Remove the motor back cover ... you will see there are flats on the armature. Move the Cap to the side ... apply the proper wrench (7/16 I think)... this will help you to remove the impeller. Now you can remove the motor from the adapter plate.

Are you trying to remove lid when the pump is on? NO, NO, NO

If not, then good! If you have valves before and after the equipment, then close them. Then remove the small 1/4" drain plug to empty the pot. Then try removing the lock ring and open it up.

Hayward pool pumps

The impeller on this Hayward pump unthreads counter clockwise.
Take a big flat head screw driver and put it on the center shaft on the back of the motor to hold the shaft solid while you unthread the impeller.

We need to change the sand in our filter ,it is a sw256t hayward ,but dont know how to remove other sand, does anyone know how?

Once you have the plumbing disconnected and valve removed,
Use a shop vac. Works well.
Once the sand is almost all removed, you can tip the tank over & rinse out with hose for the rest.

How do you change a pump seal on a hayward 1hp pool pump

The seal is located behind the impeller. Once you remove the impeller it is fairly obvious how to replace it. Basically, unscrew everything, replace it and put it back together again. There is a decent diagram on page 11 of the Hayward owners manual found here if you need it.
