Question about Canon CanoScan 8400F Film Scanner

3 Answers

My canoscan 8400F suddenly stopped working last week. I had been scanning slides thru Photoshop when on my next scan attempt, I got this message: Cannon scan for these reasons: -The original may not be set correctly; -The Protective Sheet may be put in place; -The lamp may not be warmed up (It needs a few minutes for adjusting lamp on low temp.) Scanner driver will be closed Code 2,178,0

Well the first two reasons they gave are wrong - I have adjusted and readjusted the slides several times (and frankly it's almost foolproof to set them properly) and I definitely did not place the protective sheet in place in the middle of scanning several slides. As far as the lamp not being warmed up - how could it have gotten cold in the middle of scanning?

I am not knowledgeable enough to check the sensors! How do I do that?

  • taurudak Oct 16, 2010

Ok, thanks. It would probably be cheaper to buy a new scanner than to pay a repairman at this point.

Same problem. I keep getting the same response.

Thanks Michael. I tried and did everything you told me in your reply and still the same message. Maybe the FAU thing is faulty. As much as I loved my 8400F, since I can find no one around here who repairs scanners, I am looking into a new one.

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left

Another thing is this can be caused by a faulty FAU cable. One or more of the eight wires within this cable has fractured

If the scanner stopped at the middle of scanning, the coldness of lamp can't be the problem. It might be the problem of the sensors. Give it a check.

If you are not a technical expert, it is better to leave it as it is and consult a local repairman. Scanner unlike other devices is a bit complicated.

I have a Canon 8400F film printer/scanner

'Tain't necessary. And not getting the part can be an improvement.
I cut out a cardboard template that allows me to scan 10 slides rather than the 4 of Canon's official slide adapter.

All the Canon part does is position them precisely so cropping and rotation are automatic. With Photoshop skills (File ' Automate), you can do the same yourself for whatever size. I ended up doing Brownie, 35, and 126 (gasp!) also.

For extra credit, make your adapter(s) out of genuine plastic rather than whatever cereal box you have lying around.

Not scanning

You have tried everything possible!. Try and reinstall the OS. If some dll files are corrupted, this will resolve it. You may have to reinstall all other software!

Check the cable that connects to the lid of the scanner. If it is disconnected, you won't get the Film options.
