SOURCE: My gas Craftsman Ez Fire 25cc 17 inch weed eater wont start!

Just had a similar symptom on my step-dads weedeater...... found the cylinder head loose and it had blown the gasket out. They used a very very thin gasket here.
Grab ahold of the carb and rock it back and forth a bit and see if it moves the cylinder head.

I tore it down and made my own gasket, fired right up.

Also make sure the four bolts on the side of the engine are tight that go through part of the plastic cover, there is an o-ring there.

A two-stroke crankcase needs to be completely sealed in order to run.

No spark

I would first look to make sure the spark plug is not wet. Dry the end of the plug and the cap; a q-tip should work just fine. At this time look to make sure neither end is rusty. In the future my dad keeps a large pail inverted over the motor of his mower and leaves it out all winter (in the snow and rain). He has done this for many years.

Hi I did a tune up ,changed and checked every thing I done ..too I changed the oil ,oil filter ,gas filter air filter ,got a new battery changed the plugs there new too...even a new belt new key ...but...

Spark and gas??? Must have both. Pull spark plug wire and check for spark. If you have spark, check gap on spark plug. Check the bowl on carburetor. loosen bowl screw to see if gas is coming out. If you have gas coming out, carb needs to be taken off and cleaned or rebuilt.

This 18.5 hp will not crank over past the compresson stroke, I'm guessing the timing is out. If so how do I re time this motor? It's in a craftsman mower.

Timing is usually fixed and can't be adjusted. Looks like there might be oil/water in the combustion chamber which is making the cranking very difficult. I would first start by checking the engine oil level and make sure that it's not overfull. (Adjust oil level if needed). Next, remove the spark plug and crank engine to see if fluid blows out of the spark plug hole. (Be sure to do this in a place where it will be easy to clean up especially if oil comes out). Clean and dry the end of the spark plug using brake clean and some compressed air. (Dust Off will work if you don't have a air compressor). If there is fluid coming out of spark plug hole, I would just keep cranking until no signs of fluid is coming out of spark plug hole. If the engine came to a abrupt stop, (Blade hit stump or a big rock) the engine flywheel key could have sheered causing the spark to be advanced thus difficult to start. To inspect flywheel key, remove engine upper shroud assembly, remove flywheel screen, unbolt flywheel nut and washer and you'll be able to see if there is any damage to the flywheel key or not. Flywheel keys are fairly cheap and can be purchased at your local hardware store or lawn mower repair shop. If engine still has difficulties cranking especially with spark plug being removed, then there might be some internal mechanical problems with the engine. That would be the worst case senario. Hope This Helps.

I have been given a honda mower i had to put a new pull start on it & new plug but wont start what can it be

Before you do anything, check for spark. This can be done by removing the spark plug boot from the spark plug and inserting a piece of round conductive metal into the boot, such as a screwdriver, etc. Make sure it makes contact with the coil wire in the boot. Have a second person hold the screwdriver near a metal part of the engine, but make sure there is no spilled fuel in the area. Your helper should also be wearing rubber gloves or such to insulate him from a shock. If there is a strong spark, take the following steps. Drain the old fuel out of the tank. (Fuel goes bad in 30 - 60 days after being purchased unless a fuel stabilizer was added at the time of purchase. Fuel stabilizer will NOT restore bad fuel.) Make sure you drain the carburetor bowl as well. Change the fuel filter (if applicable) and install a brand new plug. The new plug you just put in will be saturated with bad fuel. Honda carburetors are known for being very reliable, seldom needing a rebuild. If you are unable to do, or uncomfortable with any of these procedures, I suggest taking your mower to a small engine repair shop.

Ok...time to take her pulse then!

1. Does it have fuel? Look for water in fuel *(check gascan too!)

2. Does it have spark? You need to remove the plug and inspect it. do you see any oil, fuel or even water on the plug tip? You can plug in the sparkplug and dangle it near the metal part of the engine and confirm that the plug makes spark. If it doesnt get another one just to make sure the plug isnt fouled out.

3. Can the engine breathe? Remove the air filter and see if the filter is oil, water or fuel soaked. Is it rusty? Covered in dust, dirt, fuzz or fur?

You can check the engine once you are sure you have spark by putting a splash of fresh gas in the sparkplug hole before putting the plug back in and attempting to start it....leave the air filter off for now. You dont want a bad filter getting in the way right now. If it starts and runs you can put the air filter back on and try to start it....if it wont start....replace filter too!

Good luck and be careful!

Poulan 6.75 Lawn mower will not start

Remove spark plug, clean and dry. Replace plug. Remove air filter. Spray WD-40 into carb opening; one second blast. Turn over engine, (pull handle). Engine should start briefly and run for 3 seconds.  If not, you are not getting spark to spark plug. If engine starts, you have a dirty carb and you can buy a rebuild kit from manufacture.

Wont kick over

Try to start a few times, If it does not, remove spark plug, If plug is wet, you probably have a spark problem (or water in fuel). With the plug attached to the plug wire hold plug against the engine, pull cord or engage starter to see if you have a spark. If so you will have to get fuel to the engine.
