It sounds like you had a pre-release version of RDC 6.1 installed which you should have uninstalled before installing SP3.

Check this out - under "Remote Desktop Connection" you might find the solution you're looking for.

Windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupt

Step 1:
SP3 is the third and final service pack released for Microsoft Windows XP, and it eliminates many of the security holes that previously affected XP. While Microsoft recommends that users download SP3 using Windows Update, some users are unable to do so. However, it's easy to create a Windows XP SP3 installation CD; it requires only that you download the pack from the website and burn it to a CD-R/DVD-R using an ISO burner program.
Download the SP3 installation ISO by visiting the first link listed in the "Resources" section of this article. Save it to your Desktop. Download ImgBurn and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the installation executable for ImgBurn and click "Next." Follow the remaining onscreen prompts and click "Finish" to complete installation of ImgBurn. Insert a blank CD-R/DVD-R into your DVD drive. Open ImgBurn by going to "Start," "Programs" and "ImgBurn." Click "File," then "Browse for a source file." Navigate to your Desktop and select the SP3 ISO file. Click "Open." Click the blue "ISO to CD" button located on the bottom left of ImgBurn. The program will begin creating the Windows XP SP3 installation CD. This process may take anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to complete depending on the speed at which the CD-R/DVD-R is being burned. Click "OK" once the CD-R/DVD-R has finished burning. You've successfully created a Windows XP SP3 installation CD.

Should I install SP3 ?( windows xp pro) I've heard different comments regarding the install, from,"No, it caused nothing but headaches", to "Yes, it's got more security fixes, and...

Hi,
Service Pack generally has the previously updates for the operating system. Likewise Windows XP SP3 includes updates, security/ stability fixes and small functionalities, which does not have a significant impact. Hence, I think it is not necessary to install it for home user. However, it is always better to keep the operating system up-to-date in order to keep it stable and secure and for best performance.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

Service Pack 2 is not supported by windows anymore and many devices due to the security issues. Upgrade to SP3. That's your first step.

I wan't the product key for service park 2

I recommend you to Purchase a key. Its good in the perspective of System Security and Stability. You will be able to get Online updates(Patches, Other Security Updates) as well as Online Customer Support with Upgraded Software. From here you can do that easily. Windows XP Home Page. If you just want an Upgrade to your Previous product, then Just download and install the Service Pack2 (Now its time to upgrade with SP3 after you have upgraded to SP2. But still SP3 have compatibility issues with Hardware, Drivers and Applications) SP2 SP3 ISO
However if you do not want to install a Pirate Version or need a Corporate key (Fixya does not Recommend Piracy), browse here. Alternate Link.
Please be kind enough to rate the answer if it solves the issue. Feel free to contact me if you need further instructions. Thanks for Contacting Fixya!

Remote Desktop Connection doesn't work with SP3

If you're not using passwords ( i.e. a blank password ) there is a "Policy" setting which accepts blank passwords in SP2 but MS changed their mind in SP3 it's a no-no. Look carefully in group policy settings. It is hard to find. Ask for specific help setting policies. Need the policy to accept blank passwords.
