Question about Sony RDR-GX300 DVD Recorder
Hello, and thanks for using FixYa.
I believe the guide can not be used if you are watching a dvd or similar. You must be viewing a broadcast to get the guide to open.
Also the video needs to go from the cable box to the dvd recorder and then to the television for it to work. Now you might not have a cable box But the signal needs to go over the dvd recorder for it to be able to show a guide on the screen. If it doesn't work, then try using the guide feature on your television or cable box.

In order to enter Service
Mode, TV guide must be turned off
In order to do this
procedure you must have and use the correct remote. The full function
came with the set has a TV
Guide Logo in a red box. This is the remote you should use.
NOTE: If TV guide has not
yet been setup, then the 1st step is to follow instructions to set TV
Enter ZIP code, cable or
1.press and release the
"TV Guide". TV guide will appear on the screen.
2.Navigate to the TV
Guide tool bar and use the ">" button to select "setup"
in the menu and press
and release the
3.use the "arrow
down" button to select "default options"
4.press and release the
"enter" button and select "general defaults"
5.press and release the
"enter" button (opens menu on lower left side)
6. use the "arrow
down" button to select "auto guide"
7. use the ">"
button to select "off"

10. press and release the
"TV Guide" button to turn the display off
Using Service Mode:
Enter Service Mode
Use the "muting" button to select "initialize"
While on the "initialize" screen
Use the "down arrow" button to select "final setup"
Press and release the "enter" button to select "data reset"
Use the ">" button on the remote to select "yes"
Press and hold the "enter" button until the screen goes
black release "enter" button on remote.
Power the unit off using the remote control
Unplug the power cord from the media receiver to complete the reset
Plug in the media receiver; turn the system on and reset is complete.

you are that clear
but if you are talking about flashes on the t.v then it is due to sparking is taking place in your plug & socket.
if it is ok then there is a sparking in high voltage section in tv which is called fly back section.
