Question about LaCie 500GB d2 Quadra 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hard Drive is not recognized

My LaCie d2 Quadra (500gb) worked fine on my old computer (and on half of the computers I plug it into) but it won't work on mine (or the other half of computers I plug it into).

The drive does appear in the Device Manager but with a yellow question mark beside it. The error message I get when I try to update the driver is this:

The hardware was not installed because the Wizard cannot find the necessary software.

That's the same message I got when I first plugged it in as well. I have read lots of forums. I understand most drives don't require drivers anymore, or there is some generic windows driver that might not be working. All of my other firewire drives work so something on my computer is working. I've tried different cables. I've tried USB 2. Same result.

I can't roll back the driver, and I've tried uninstalling the device and doing a FULL COLD restart. Same result.

Anymore ideas? Anyone know where I can download this phantom software?

Worst comes to worst I'll have to take this drive and another one to a computer that recognizes both and copy the files from one to the other hoping that the new one will be recognized by my computer but there should be a simpler way.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center addition and I have downloaded all updates including Service Pack 3. Dell XPS 600.

Here's what I get from the Disk Management.

    Disk 1 Unknown.
No option to "import foreign disk"

Black bar on top of the "Unallocated" space. When I right click my options are:

    Initialize Disk
    Properties
Help (troubleshooter does not help me with my problem)

That's basically all I can do.

Doesn't work

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega2_bing.gif external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link for the solution.

I just tried to connect my LaCie 500GB to my computer to back up some photos and music. it's not recognized on my computer, and there's a faint ticking sound coming from the LaCie. What should i do?

Hello,

It sounds like the power supply is going out. I have seen this problem before. The best thing to do is take the drive out of the case and install it in another case. We have been using a model from Eagle that works great. We have more information at the following link:

It wont recognize files and i cant eject it

Just restart your computer, this should fix all problems, don't worrie it will shut everything down and won't break anything. Can't say for sure on the files though they should be fine, if your computer froze however this is a different story.

If your in a program that is writing to your hard drive it's a good idea not to plugg hardware in as this can overload you ram or interfear with other prosseses. Just think if you will want the thing before you start your project.

How to format the LaCie 500GB d2 Quadra for Windows XP??

This way it should work...
Connect your drive to the computer...
Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer management.
A new window will appear...
Select Storage > Disk management on the left of the window.
Now you will see the different drives that are connected or part of your system.
One of the drives listed there is your LaCie, i think you'll recognize it by name...
Right-click on it, and select 'format'
In the new window, select the new volume label (as you like it), the file system (use NTFS), and set allocation unit size to default.
Make sure 'Perform a quick format' is not checked...

Then click OK. Your drive will be formatted now... Don't interrupt the process
