Question about Whirlpool GH7208XR Convection / Microwave Oven

1 Answer

We have a 1 1/2 year old Whirlpool microwave/convection oven. The microwave does not heat-----F7 HV SMPS error. Had a technician here. He could not detect if the problem was the magnetron or a malfunction in the board? Spent $129 without getting the problem solved. Can't believe that Whirlpool cannot help in this situation. The technician said the cost to repair both, if that is the issue, would be well over $300 plus we have already spent $129. Help!!

Replaced the magnatron and it went out again, checked the cooling fan and that was the problem.

F7 means that the control panel is not getting feedback from the Switched Mode Power Supply (high-voltage inverter).

This could be due to a problem with the inverter or the control unit / circuit board, but it appears to be the latter in most cases.

F7 call for service

Hi, the F7 = HV SMPS feedback error. Most of the time this is a costly microprocessor board issue but can be something as simple as a loose or broken wire.

If it is in fact new you should contact Whirlpool for warranty service. Anything you would do as a consumer will void the warranty.

Microwave acts like its working but doesn't heat. The convection oven works.

Most likely causes are a blown fuse in HV area of microwave or an open thermal protector or thermal fuse.
Less likely causes are failure of various parts in the HV area.

Due to the lethal dangers inherent in microwaves, servicing of these parts is likely best left to a professional. That said, if you are technically versed I can point you in the direction of some good resources for troubleshooting and repair.

GH7208XR Error Code #7

Behind the right front corner faceplate is a bag with the tech support info.
I used this and went through all the troubleshooting and got to the power inverter board. This board has the 2 red wires out of it that go to the magnetron. Instead of replacing the whole inverter module , I examined all the components on it. I found that there are 2 high voltage rectifier diodes attached to the transformer and 1 of them was not testing good. The diodes are UXC2B diodes.. Just clipped out the bad one and soldered in a new one.
Hope this helps..
