Question about Kenmore 63252 Microwave Oven

Open Question

I have a kenmore microwave oven model 721.63252 or 721.63259. The glass turntable platter stopped turning following a temporary power outage. However, if I take it off, the supporting frame does turn. The oven still heats up and works otherwise. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

SOURCE: Microwave turntable.

Is that the only thing that doesn't work? If so it could be a coupler or a belt, possibly the motor it self.

SOURCE: Kenmore Microwave 63252

Microwaves use a special ceramic fuse that has probably been popped by the outage. You have to take the cover off and it looks just like the regular cylindrical glass fuse except this one is white instead of clear. I think radio shack has them. Hopefully the fuse stopped the power surge before it got the front panel controls.

SOURCE: Grinding noise from turning platter mechanism - Kenmore #63252

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

You can usually find exploded views and order parts by entering your model number here at the Sears parts site.

A full Sears/Kenmore model number has 3 digits, a dot, then 8 more digits, such as ###.########

Oven heats, but light, fan and turntable do not come on.

Hi Ted

many microwaves have safety mechanisms to reverse, or stop the turntable if it senses resistance to the turning. This is done both because
  1. the turntable is usually driven by a small motor with a gear reduction transmission to get more torque on the glass platter and your food, and if something resists the turning, it can damage the gear train or belt if it keeps running.
  2. if you have something with liquid in it and it hits a wall, it could tip over, possibly spilling scalding liquid all over and maybe surprising the person who opens the door.
In some cases, it'll just stop and then try again the next time you run the microwave. The banging on the case sometimes turning things back on suggests that either something in the turntable mechanism is awry, or that there is a common hot wire, ground loop, or possibly fuse for the light/fan/turntable.

the manual for the oven doesn't really say anything about this.

You can see generic intructions on looking for an internal fuse here
Panasonic Microwave NN CT552W has no power plug fuse ok Has it got thermal... . Please, in particular, make sure you unplug the oven before opening anything. This is one of those devices where defeating the interlocks and having it turn on can seriously hurt you.

With regard to the turntable, in particular, it's really easy over time for exploded spaghetti sauce, spilled cocoa, and overmelted butter to have run down into the indentation in the middle of the bottom of the oven cavity. Remove the platter. Is it clean in there? Does it look like the 'this person never flosses' picture for mechanical rotors? If so, start with some kitchen cleaner and a washcloth damp (not soaked) with hot water. Let the cloth steam /warm the area a bit, wipe it down. repeat if necessary. If there's a lot of cruft built up there, that could be keeping you on the edge of safety shut-down.

Good Luck!

My ge micro will not stop turning

HELLO.

If by not turning mean turntable fault, the solution is given below in detail.

1 Press "Stop" to halt microwave operation.

2 Press the "Turntable" button once to turn off rotation.

3 Push the door-release button to open the microwave oven if you do not have a "Turntable" button on your control keypad.

4 Lift and remove the glass platter from the oven, then pick up the plastic track with three wheels below the platter. Set aside these parts.

5 Insert the elevated microwave cooking tray into the oven. The tray has three to four short legs that hold it above the bottom of the microwave, keeping it from interfering with the rotating bolt in the bottom center of the oven the drives the turntable. You can now place food on the elevated tray and cook normally without disrupting the drive bolt.

Thanks.

The turn table sometimes (most) doesn't turn and stuff like coffee in a take out cup will burn at the bottom

The turntable motors in most units is marginal at best; they are synchronous motors and while reliable, can fail.
Try removing the glass platter and heating a cup of water while watching the center spindle to see if it is turning consistently. If not, it may be defective.
When replacing the glass platter make sure the bearing ring in properly located and that the platter engages as it should.

How do you turn the carousel on/off on a Kenmore Microwave Oven model: 5658932580

Look at the owner's manual of similar Kenmore models there does not seem to be a setting that allows you to turn off the turntable. However if your microwave (sorry but I couldn't find your exact model number online) has the time of carousel that has a lift out glass plate with a notch (hub) in the center of the bottom side then you effectively turn of the carousel my removing this glass plate. (see pg 4 of the manual - above link) You can place a normal microwave safe plate in the microwave in it's place. Make sure to leave the rollers in place...just remove the turntable.

The turntable comes off it's track and sparks. The sparks have taken off the black paint on the inside of the door. How can I touch up the spot of the door? I rent and I can't afford to replace the thing!

Sounds like you haven’t correctly centered the ring assembly under your glass platter. Remove the glass platter, now place the plastic ring with tiny wheels in the center and move it around by hand. You will be able to tell instantly if it’s centered correctly. Now place the platter on the center hub gear.

Turntable does not turn when on. I've checked the turntable button and it is on.

Make sure the glass platter is correctly seated on the plastic drive. Now gently press down on the platter and see if it resists turning. If the platter turned easily, the plastic drive is spinning on the motor shaft and needs replaced. If the platter resists movement, the motor under the floor needs to be replaced. To replace either part visit the web site www.partselect.com If you found any of these suggestions helpful, please rate my solution.
