Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Getting dc and uc codes. Took clutch apart and cleaned and checked spring as suggested. Everything in there is ok. I don't have an upper bearing just the 1 way bearing. There is a lot of wobble in the spin cycle even through the wash cycle.

Tumblers rotate only. Codes come up only on spin cycle, usually tumblers turn the clothes then spin cycle starts and wobbles to give error code after the third time. Last time the service guy was here he changed the board on top for $507, it was under warranty then, but know it is out. Took 5 different service personal to fix it the first time. Water doesn't appear to be leaking any where and there was no signs of rust any where. The clutch was never replaced when this happened last time just the board on top. My clutch has the two catches right in the steel center hub, no upper bearing assy, like your clutch repair post. Where did you buy your clutch for $50? Have a feeling it is the board up top though. It lasted 3 years when he changed that last. Before that I had a service guy here 1 a month, whirlpool gave me an extended warranty for 2 years for free because I had so many problems right from the start.
    Thanks,
    Derek

Checked if the tumblers were turning during spin cycle with no clothes in washer and they didn't. Once spin cycle gets started it will run fine, just have problem at first start-up of spin. If you can hold tub for first little bit it is ok.

  • derek_howes Oct 18, 2010

Tub wobbles a lot during start-up, even empty. Can't find service manual, the one on this site comes up not found. Had a new tds and put it on the front. I believe they are working because of the movement I am getting. Struts seem to be working, if depress they do go back to normal. The 1 on the right is a little sticky going down, but springs back. Did not check the hanging ones in the back, don't really know what they do.
    Thanks,
    Derek

Is the wash tub rotating CW in the wash cycle (tumblers should rotate only)? You can release the washer top to observe. If so I feel there may be binding in what I call the Spinner support bearings you can see those at the end of my Clutch Fix post.

Are you taking dc/uc unballance error codes while in wash cycle or just during spin cycle?

I believe somewhere around series 12 and above the machine design went to the integrated lower tub bearing/One-Way roller clutch bearing.

Any sign of wash water contaminating the Clutch Pulley One-Way bearing (rust)?.........Rich

" If you can hold tub for first little bit it is ok." How much movement do you take on start of spin cycle with wet wash load ? Have you checked the range of motion of thge TDS as per the Service Manual? Are the Struts level and if you dispress them/bottom them out will they return to a level setting?

Derek you need the Service Manual...... The Service Manual at this site links to servicematters.com and they now charge for access to that site that’s why you and everyone else can’t access the Service Manual.

I don't want to cross post on this site. Your issue is my last post on this site. As you can tell no one else has jumped in to help. E-mail me at dh1200s@yahoo.com and I will point you to a site to get the service manual. I don't check that e-mail box regularly I use it for one-way screening……….. so post back here and let me know when you have dropped me a line I will immediately e-mail you back with SM info. I still get FIXYA e-mail notifications on the post……….but that’s all I…. can’t post pics and you are not allowed to post helpful links here a lot of handcuffs with this site.

""Tub wobbles a lot during start-up, even empty. "" If the Tub is wobbling at start up empty……. will it complete a Spin Only cycle with no wash load in the basket?

It sounds like your struts are OK maybe coat them with a little WD-40. The back hangers are just that they are hangers. I want you to get the Service Manual and test the TDS limits on page 19. This is a thru the lid check in Service Mode. We need to troubleshoot down to the fail point before you start buying parts. Most repair people shotgun in parts because they don’t know how to troubleshoot this machine. I believe you have experienced that already. That becomes expensive for you. And you more than likely would pull the plug on the process and move on. I would try to get you to a point where you can make a decision to DIY the repair or scrap the 1$K machine.

We need to see if the tub excursion is at the TDS limits triggering the unbalance error to the Control Board. If the tub wobble is not excess the TDS may not be working as designed……. You need the SM again…….e-mail me this is my last post here……..Rich

Out of balance top load washer

This was my fix, my machine that would error out with DC/UC codes.

I just did a repair on my FAV6800AAW by lubricating the needle bearings in the clutch pulley hub, the tub displacement sensor checked OK per the service manual check. I was getting dc/uc errors in the spin cycle, washer was purchased in 7/05. I have basic mechanical skills and used a socket wrench to remove clutch pulley, just follow the service manual removal steps to remove the clutch pulley. Pull the plastic cover off the clutch pulley and inspect the spring, clean/lube needle bearings and the clutch hub coupler that drives spinner shaft. I used WD40 I may need to re-lube down the road with a good light grease. It took a few tries for me to get the clutch pulley to stay on after re-install and power up, getting the clutch pulley seated properly is the trick. I did not remove the washer tub for this fix, I believe I saw a posting where someone did. I just leaned the washer back to get a better reach angle, it is a tight work area. I did not want to junk 4 yr old $1k machine with out trying a fix. If you want to work on this model get the service manual, good luck!

Tom,

Here is a link posted by another member of this site for the Svr Repair manual;

This will help you trouble shoot issues with this machine.  I removed my clutch and lubed needle berings in the clutch pully and that took care of my issue of DC/UC errors in spin cycle.  Here is a quick note on my repair action.

I just went thru my 10th load of a mix of light, medium and heavy loads and all work fine no unbalance errors (DC/UC). Doesn’t fix the tangle problem :) Prior to this fix I could only run the washer with no clothes in it to complete a spin cycle with no dc/uc error codes.
