Manual say 'incandescent' light bulbs only.

What can I control with my EJ351C? The EJ351C timer is to be used with standard base incandescent light bulbs only! It should not be used to control lighting such as:

  • Compact Florescent
  • Energy Saver
  • Flood lights
  • Halogen
  • Mercury Vapor
  • Christmas lights
  • Candelabra bulbs

Can I use a dimmer switch with light bulbs whose packaging makes no mention of whether or not the bulb is "dimmable"? (be they incandescent, CFL or LED)

Most old dimmer switches do not work with energy saving/led bulbs, they will work fine with the old style filament bulbs, the newer dimmer switches will be compatible with energy saving bulbs and will indicate on the packaging!

When hitting the next/on/off button, it dims the lights vice turning them off???

The EJ500 is rated for incandescent (resistive) bulbs only, and not LED CFL etc.
Max distance between light and timer is 100 feet and wire cannot be underground.
Replace with ST01 timer, or Ei600 timer... these timers are rated for any load (resistive or inductive), and are programmable or dawn-dusk... 7 day... single-pole or 3-way

EJ351 is programmed to work. In the on position the light it controls is on properly. in the automatic off position the light is on at approximately half intensity. When the manual control is in the o

This timer is rated for incandescent light bulb only.
With 40 watt minimum.
With 100' maximum distance between bulb and timer.

EJ351 is not rated for CFL bulbs (or motors etc).
CFL bulbs are considered inductive loads (same as motors), while incandescent bulb is resistive load (same as a heating element).
Both types of loads use electricity differently.
Programmable wall timers are not ordinary on-off switch... unless you use the override switch.
... instead timers control electricity with electronic circuit board.
So when the manufacturer designs the electronics inside the timer, the design must anticipate how the electricity is used by the load.
Older designs like EJ351, and some modern timers, are not rated for CFL.
... however most newer timer designs are rated for both resistive and inductive loads.
Always read the specification sheet for load rating before installing programmable timer.

How to do energy saver dimming ?

Most modern dimmers provide normal energy savings. They reduce the total amount of watts consumed on the circuit. Many years ago, dimmers only reduced the watts consumed as light - making up the difference as heat in the dimmer switch. A 100W light turned down to 1/2 wattage at a dimmer switch resulted in 50 watts of light at the bulb, but 50 watts of heat was created in the switch. That was zero energy savings. The newer electronic dimmers will still let 50 watts be used as light, but only a few watts as heat in the switch.

To maximized energy savings, use of new cold cathode technology lights such as CFL (compact fluorescent lamp), LED (Light Emitting Diode), etc. types are suggested. You can use these lamps on a dimmer to furrther reduce the amount of energy used - but only if the lamp indicates that it is dimmable.

If the lamp or fixture does not specifically state it can be used on a dimmer, don't. This includes powering a light through a dimmer that is set to maximum brightness. Use a standard non-dimming switch instead.

I hope this helps & good luck!

The EJ500C is designed only for standard incandescent lights, not chandelier bulbs, CFLs, etc. Replace it with the ST01C, and you'll be fine. Intermatic may even exchange it for you if you if you complain to them.
