Question about HP Compaq nc6220 Notebook
The only thing I can think of that would do that is if the power setting are messed up. There are different levels of power settings you can choose. Normally on the battery it runs the CPU slower, the screen less bright and so on to save power and make the battery last. It almost sounds like the full power mode or the adaptor mode is using the battery or extended power settings.
What you can do is look under control panel for the power settings icon or right click on the battery or the power plug by the clock and then adjust properties. Look for the tab or pull down that says A/C power or Full power or something like that. Then you need to go to the settings section for the cpu and cooling. Those are the two that have to be adjusted together. Depending on the software controlling you will either see a min/max setting or something that says cpu speed. Just adjust the max to 100% or set the cpu to variable. You can set it to max but that runs fast all the time and is noisier than it needs to be as the fans will always be running harder. And double check that the cooling settings are set to variable as well. Once you save or apply the settings your laptop should be much faster. There is a chance there is a setting in the system bios that is set to slow cpu but that is supposed to be over ridden by the windows software.
Anyway thats about the only thing that I can think of that would do this.Once you get the speed sorted out you can use the same panel to tweak the battery portion to run slower and not use as much power. If the cpu is allowed to speed up and down it only uses more power when you run more so it can slow down when its not needed. Think of this just like a car going up and down a hill. Power to go up then coasts down.
