Did it get wet. that sounds like something that would happen if it got wet. if you don't know that it got wet you could shine a light into the headphone jack and look for a white sticker. if wet the white sticker will have turned reddish

You may have damaged it when it was dropped. If the restore won't work then it's going to be a hardware problem.
If your lucky it might just be a ribbon cable that has come out of it's socket. If you have the first gen iPhone (2g) i wouldn't bother opening it up and it's a nightmare. But if you have a iPhone 3g then you could open it and check the cables.
