Question about Kirby Ultimate G Bagged Upright Vacuum

1 Answer

We bought our Kirby less than 5 years ago and lately are not happy with it....it keeps breaking. The warranty has expired and our biggest complaint is that it has lost it's suction power. All the contents stay in the hose when I vacuum out the car or upholstery and it does vacuum well at all. The Kirby store quoted us over $200 to fix/ service it. Apparently this is not covered in the free yearly maintenance which we just had done. Any suggestions?

  • Hi there,
  • Well I do have a suggestion though you may not like it use it as a boat anchor.....no no I am just kidding. I have sold vacuums for 20 years and Kirby has been around for years before I started.Though they have gotten better in the last 20 years they are still using the same system and it is one that most machines use. It is called direct air flow and this is just simply that the air takes the dirt in to the machine and drops it off in the bag. The more you put in the bag the less power you get so the more you \vacuum the less efficient it becomes.
  • There is a solution though it is called cyclonic action and it has been around for over 75 years. It is used in several machines today although it was invented many moons ago. There is a vacuum called Tri-Star that has been using it for years and it works great. The other machine that uses it is called Filter Queen and it has also been around for over 75 years.for years they were the only ones using it because they had it patented. Now their Paten has expired and other companies have started to incorporate it. I do not recommend a Dyson but you may have seen them on t.v. and they advertise cyclonic action like the guy invented it. Well he didn't and if you browse around through eh vacuum questions you will soon notice that there are many Dyson owners that are less than happy.
  • Now a Tri-Star would be great but thgey are 2500.00 brand new so you may not want to or be able to put that kind of cash out on a vacuum . Well I understand that ,So what I would suggest is going to a used vacuum store and looking for a refurbished Tri Star and picking one of them up for anywhere from 399.00 for an older one to 999.00 for one that is not new but may be between 5 and 10 years oild. They are made of metal yet it is called magnalite and it is very light to say the least. They are small and very powerful and best of all they DO NOT...I REPEAT DO NOT lose power as they fill.
  • If you go and ask to see one at your local vacuum store they will demonstrate how thus works and if you are in the USA the prices gave maybe way off as I am in Canada and I only have the prices for here.(EH!)...lol
  • Please take my advise and go to your local vacuum store and at least have a look at them they are all that I have said and more.
  • Now just because I sold them please do not think I am giving you a pitch because I sold many machines over the years and Electrolux and Kirby were included, so I won't bore you anymore with this but that is the most honest advice I can give from my experience in the last 19.5 years in the Business.....Thank you and please rate my answer if you liked it! thanks for choosing Fixya.com
  • P.S. Tri-Star is Manufactured in Anaheim California by a company called "Interstate Engineering"

How long is Kirby motor got warranty?

It depends. Did you buy it from someone who will honor the warranty? If not you may not have any warranty. Check first with the person you bought it from. You may find if you bought it from someone who came to your house to demo it the company you bought it from is no longer around or in business. Try to find a Kirby warranty center in your area. Be careful though, Make sure to get price quotes before any work is performed. I have many people tell me they took a Kirby vacuum in for maintenance or a minor repair and got hit with a $500 or $700 repair bill when they went to pick it up

I've owned my Kirby G4 for 15 years and never had to touch it for maintenance. Should I ever get it overhauled or tuned up?

Kirby recommends getting it serviced yearly but if you are mechanically inclined you can service it yourself. the biggest thing is cleaning and blowing all the dust out of the motor and inside compartment. also check your motor fan for chips nicks, and stress cracks around the center. Inspect the bearings and motor carbon brushes for wear and noise. and put some 3 in 1 oil on the top handle slide assy on top of the motor. do not disassemble this unit there are many way bearings inside and if its not reassembled just right it will throw off your self propelled unit

No power from Kirby!!

Determine if the headlight works before anything else. If the light works but the motor won't you have power thru the vac and the problem is internal possibly motor brushes... or a loose wire on the inside connecting to the switch.
If the light goes out is likely a switch or cord problem. Switches on these vacs break more often than cords. What you see on top is the switch button, not the actually internal switch, however a switch does not normally fail while the vac is running, that sounds more like a loose connection or a bad cord.
So isolate the cord. Unplug it at both ends and plug lamp ( or test meter) into the cord into the cord and gently wiggle where the plug end meets the cord. If the lamp goes on and off the issue is the cord. You can buy a replacement specific to the Kirby series and plug it in yourself. If this s does not isolate the problem, take it to a service center. Kirby is very intricate inside.

Vacuum keeps burning up belts Comment by campoclan, posted on May 02, 2008
I have a Kirby Sentra and have had problems since I bought it a few years ago with burning up belts. I go through at least two a month. What is wrong with it? I keep the roller clean each time I vacuum.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
Some Kirby vacuum in the brushroll have bushings and some have bearings and the bushing bind up and do not spin properly and I suggest to replace your brushroll with a genuine Kirby belts and brushroll of which would work the best for you performance wise. A suggested belt change depending on carpet can be every 3 to 4 months or 4 to 6 months and the brushroll when needed, some carpets are ******* the belts and they do require change more frequently. The rest should be fine. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions

Your shampooer is not broken. (sorry Fanny)

You are missing a wee screen that fits on the hole where the little hose plugs into the tank. Check inside the hose end or down inside your shampooer box. Here's a link to my online Kirby shampooer instructions...

Vibrating and noisy Kirby

Power off the vacuum.

Unplug the power cord from the wall.

Remove the head or hose attachment.

Look at the fan and make sure all the fins on the fan are there.

If part of one or more is missing it will cause the fan to wobble and shake.
