Question about Acer TravelMate 2480 PC Notebook

1 Answer

Hi there to "THE GURU" My Acer laptop Travelmate 2480 shows no sign of life despite checking power supply via mains and battery supply. Voltages checked and measured. Completely disassembled now looking for the obvious fault (solder dry joint etc) Nothing found. Checked fan --- runs ok with seperate power supply to enable check. When sw on no power lights either mains or battery. No fan running. Completely dead. What is most commonly the problem with these models with the snags described above? Appreciated. Mike.

RTFM You can download the manual by googling "acer travelmate 2480 manual" (without the quotes). Or just click here

According to the Acer manual:

"Conditioning a new battery pack
Before you use a battery pack for the first time, there is a
"conditioning" process that you should follow:
1 Insert the new battery without turning the computer on.
2 Connect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery.
3 Disconnect the AC adapter.
4 Turn on the computer and operate using battery power.
5 Fully deplete the battery until the battery-low warning appears.
6 Reconnect the AC adapter and fully charge the battery again.

Follow these steps again until the battery has been charged and
discharged three times.
Use this conditioning process for all new batteries, or if a battery hasn't
been used for a long time. If the computer is to be stored for more
than two weeks, you are advised to remove the battery pack from the
unit.

Warning: Do not expose battery packs to temperatures below 0°C
(32°F) or above 60°C (140°F). Extreme temperatures may adversely
affect the battery pack.

By following the battery conditioning process you condition your
battery to accept the maximum possible charge. Failure to follow this
procedure will prevent you from obtaining the maximum battery
charge, and will also shorten the effective lifespan of the battery.
In addition, the useful lifespan of the battery is adversely affected by
the following usage patterns:
• Using the computer on constant AC power with the battery
inserted. If you want to use constant AC power, you are advised to
remove the battery pack after it is fully charged.
• Not discharging and recharging the battery to its extremes, as
described above.
• Frequent use; the more you use the battery, the faster it will reach
the end of its effective life. A standard computer battery has a life
span of about 500 charges."

Acer 2480 2247 won't power up -no lights no nothing, pwr supply is not the problem, lid close switch isn't stuck ,pwr. on switch seems fine and power supply jack on motherboard is not broken

Remove the main battery and the power supply, allow several minutes to get rid of any residual charge, now plug the power supply adapter back in and press power "leave battery out" is there any change? if not! remove power supply, now! press and hold power for 60 seconds to reset the laptop. Next install main battery back in and the power supply adapter, power up! if no change, the motherboard is the problem.

hi there,

try to unplug every thing connected to the laptop, even the power supply. Now disconnect the battery. Now press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Reconnect the battery and power to the unit. now try to power on the machine.

You should be good to go.

In case that you still face the issue, i would recomend that you should visit the service center.

If the laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all.
OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time.
If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced.

No power

laptops don't powerup either because the battery isn't full, or it isn't plugged to the mains using the lead. if you think the above is fine then it must be because the laptops isn't accepting power in, either because of the motherboard has died, the chips have burned or the power button is faulty. if it's working using the battery but not using the charger then you need a DC socket repair. if it's plugged to the mains but there is no sign of any lights you're likely to have lost your motherboard. if your laptop does start but you see nothing on the screen its usualy the memory ram or the screen or the motherboard, plug it into an external screen and see what happens

this isn't something you can find a solution for in here, the best way is to take it to your repair shop
an independent one will do, or else I recommend a website which collects it and does it for you
cheaptofix.co.uk

I hope this helps. Please rate me.

the metal rod is an internal part to the coaxial power coupling, which is normally soldered to the main board in the computer. Chances are you are going to be taking it in for repair. Good Luck!
