If you're using Windows XP no driver is necessary. make sure all cables, data and power, are connected properly. locate my computer, right click and select manage and disk management... locate the external usb, if you can find it on the list, right click and then you need to convert it to basic or dynamic and assign a drive letter. if you can't find the drive in the list, try rebooting your pc. if you still can't find the drive... you might want to check your external enclosure or drive if it's good or bad. good luck =)

Mac not recognizing External Western Digital HD.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Powers up but is not recognized by windows operating

This is a solution that worked for me, but should only be tried if you've reached the conclusion that the hard drive is dead, out of warranty and ready to dump it for a new one.
On the inside of the fancy casings of these external drives lies a standard sata or IDE hard drive like you would normally find on the inside of your desktop.
Try opening the case and removing the hard drive itself to plug into a desktop which has the same connections and see if that works.
I work as a tech support agent for one of the departments that just can't afford data recover and luckily with this solution I was able to save the hard drive and just plug it into their machine as an internal rather than an external.
I REPEAT THIS SHOULD NOT BE DONE IF THE DRIVE IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY.
Hope this helps, Cheers!
