It takes a router and not a switch. A switch works downstream from the router.

On the face of DYNEX 5-Port 10/100Mb Ethernet Switch box... It avers: Allows multiple devices to link to a 100 Mbps Network. It would be in the BEST INTEREST of the consumer if DYNEX printed what devices, i.e. printers, scanners, etc. on the face of the box! NO PC listed as a device would clearify this switch is NOT for use with two or more PCs to operate from one ip address. Maybe, just maybe the box could clearify a router is needed when using two or more PCs on the same ip address. DUH... is that impossible for them to do?

Can a dynex DX-ESW5 act as a print server?

No. You need a router to set / obtain an IP or connect it directly to the computer RS232 serial port. No network required, but is old school and may be difficult. Specially with MAC. You are better off getting a new router.

A network switch like the dynex does not have an ip address. Typically, only managed switches would have an ip address.

I am trying to connect a dynex DX-ESW5 swith to my netgear WNR2000 router

Modem (DSL or Cable) -> Router (WAN port), Router (LAN port) -> Switch.
Use Ethernet cable.
If that does not solve your problem, please give me more details.
There is really nothing to it - it is very easy.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

2 computers one internet. only one computer gets internet at a time.

Assuming you have connected the computers and the switches in this order:

INTERNET Router --> Switch--> 2 Computers

Also make sure that the main DHCP device whether its your main modem/router or any other device, they are set to assign IP's using DHCP and they can accomodate 2 computers. If DHCP is not enabled assign IP's manually.

Cannot use more than 1 computer with my 5 port router

Start with buying a router. The Dx-ESW5 is a 5-port switch, not a router. http://dynexproducts.com/t-faqs_dx_esw5.aspx

You could make it work, but you'd have to assign IP addresses to each of the machines connected to the Internet. For security and a number of other reasons, it's quicker and easier to just grab a router on sale at your local office supply place for $30 bucks or so.

Using laptop and pc on this router

You SHOULD NOT post your personal details here...

The dx esw5 is not a router, it is a switch so it cannot assign an IP to the second PC.

dx esw manual HERE

Which ever PC is turned on first will get an IP assigned by the modem and the other will not.

My guess is that the service provider for your internet only allows 1 IP to be assigned by the modem.

What model is the modem

I think you need a router to share the internet between 2 PC's
