My PC detects the USB Drive but it doesn't appear in the My computer display

Hey, I just got the HM121HI that came with a Installation disk for Windows98 SE. I know that XP doesn't normally need this installation disk and can auto detect the drive anyway. But that's just it, my PC knows the drive is connected and installed but it does not show the drive in the My Computer display. - Can anyone help

Cannot format portable hdd

Step 1:
When you connect an external hard drive or USB flash drive to your PC computer, the drive should appear in the "Computer" window. However, if the data on the drive is corrupted, you may receive an error saying that the disk is not accessible. In order to get the removable disk working again, you will need to boot up your computer using the Windows installation disk and then format the corrupted drive.
Connect the removable disk to your computer. Insert the Windows installation disk into your optical drive and reboot the system. Press any key on the keyboard when you see the prompt asking if you want to boot to the CD. Press "Next" and then click on the "I accept the license terms" button. Click "Custom" when the program asks you what type of installation you want to perform. Click on the "Drive options (advanced)" button. The next window will display a list of all the hard drives connected to your computer. The removable disk will appear, even if its data is inaccessible. Highlight the removable disk that you want to format and then choose the "NTFS" option. Click "OK" to clear the data and format the hard drive.

External drive not picked up on computer

External hard drives not only provide additional storage space on a computer system but also allow data to be conveniently transported from one computer to another.

These drives typically plug right in to a port on the computer and function without any additional setup; however, if you are running into trouble where your external hard drive is not being detected, you must troubleshoot the situation to determine why the drive appears to be missing.

Check the USB connection running from the hard drive to your computer.

If the USB cable is not seated securely in the port, the computer will not detect the external drive.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and plug it into a different USB port. Occasionally, a USB port will fail to function with some hardware and changing the USB connection may correct this issue.

Switch from a USB to a Firewire cable connection, if possible.

The USB port on the hard drive may have died; if so, changing to a Firewire connection will resolve this issue.

Install the driver for the external device from the installation disc provided with the product. Older computer systems may require you to manually install this driver.

After inserting the installation CD, follow the prompts from the installation wizard to install the driver on your computer.

Restart the computer.

If you connected the external drive while the computer is powered down, it may not recognize the device when you turn on the computer.

After restarting the computer, connect the external drive to the system.

The drive should now be detected by your operating system.

Connect the external hard drive to a power source and then plug it into your PC computer using a USB or Firewire cable.

Log on to your PC computer using an account with administrative privileges.

Open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.

Open the "Administrative Tools" folder and then double-click on the "Computer Management" icon.

Select "Disk Management" from the list of options on left side of the window.

Right-click on the drive you want your computer to recognize and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths."

Select a drive letter for the external hard drive to be recognized as and click "OK."

The drive will now appear in My Computer.

Hope this helps.

120G hard disk doesn't work on p4m266a mother board

The hard disk maybe faulty especially if the BIOS cannot detect the hard disk.
Try connecting the hard disk into an USB hard drive adapter and then plug it into the USB port of a working computer. If this computer cannot detect the USB hard drive adapter as an external storage device then this hard drive is faulty.

Pxe-e61

PXE-E61 ERROR
The error PXE-E61: Media test failure usually means the hard diskhas failed or the hard disk needs re-seating or the disk controller is faulty.First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.Next - to check if the harddrive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer cannot see itas an USB mass storage device and you cannot open the various folders and fileson this drive, then this confirms the hard drive is faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

If the BIOS setting for the Boot up device order does not have the USB as a boot up device then it is not possible to boot up your computer with an USB device.
For a Drive 0 seek problem -
First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.

Hello,
I would suggest you check the BIOS if everything is detected properly. Like the hard drive and the memory. If both are working properly and being detected by BIOS properly, then you just might need to install your Windows 7 thru USB. You might need to use a different computer to convert your Win 7 OS DVD to USB installer.
1. Use a different computer w/ DVD 2. Use ISO software to convert the Win7 DVD to ISO 3. Download the converter from this link click here or directly from this link 4. Make sure you have an available USB Flash Disk that has a capacity of 4GB or higher. 5. Once you're done converting the Win7 DVD to an ISO file, use the tool above to convert the ISO file into a USB installer.
This will only work if your hard drive is properly detected. Bootmgr error means 2 things, either the hard drive is not detected or corrupted windows installation.
Hope this helps!

How to connect to a pc

Install the software first, then connect the usb and power cables, then turn on the unit.
Here is a section of the installation manual :

Software Installation
1. Do not connect this device to computer yet.
2. Insert the utility CD into computer's optical drive, and then the installation window should
automatically appear on the screen. If the installation window doesn't show up, go to "My
Computer" and browse the CD. By executing the "index.html" file, the installation window
will appear.
3. Click on "Private Folder Manager"/ "Playlist Manager", and then follow the on screen
instructions for installation.
4. After the software had been successfully installed, see [Connecting to USB] for cable
connection.
Connecting to USB
1. Connect the plug of AC adapter to the connector marked "DC IN", plug the other end into
an electric outlet.
2. Connect the USB cable to the USB connector. Then connect the other plug to computer's
USB port.
3. Press the Power switch and then the blue LED will light up.
4. The computer will detect this device and you can start accessing the drive.

Help me! I cannot detect my LaCie Little Disk on my MacBook

There are a number of things that could have gone wrong here.

1. Perhaps you have a bad (USB) cable, try another...

2. Perhaps it's the MAC that may be rejecting it, try it on another MAC or PC (if you do try it to a PC and the drive is formatted to MAC OS, you will need to search for it in disk management.

Right Click on my computer > select 'manage' > on the left-hand pane, select disk management. The drive may come up as unknown if it does appear there.

If the drive has a FAT or NTFS fomrat, then the drive should come up under my computer, although I still advise check disk management.

If you try it on another MAC, just check disk utilities again.

3. The drive has a controller failure, which could explain why it appears to be on but not functioning correctly (the controller function is to communicate with the CPU, so that it appears in disc utilities / disk management.

If you are effected by the second option, you will need to get in touch with MAC support...

If you are effected by the 3rd option, you will most likely need to have it replaced

Hope that helps and clears it up for you!
