SX-315 Suddenly Shuts Off

I recently bought this SX-315 from an estate sale. After putting a new cord on it, when plugged in, the display comes on for a few microseconds, then shuts off and smells kinda hot but doesn't smoke. Could it be the power supply board?

Yep, I do have a multimeter, robotek. In fact, I have two types: digital and analog. Would the first place to look be the output and driver transistors?

    robotek,

I disconnected the subwoofer amp board and low and behold,

it worked! I don't intend to use a subwoofer anyway. It has to be on that particular board.

I have it operating in two channel stereo mode. Only major problem is I can't adjust bass and treble from the front panel.

I didn' get the original remote control with this receiver.

Sounds like speaker wire are touching each other somewhere. Check the back of the receiver and each speaker. If indeed that is the cause its making your unit go into protect mode. All it takes is one stray wire

Hi Pete7591

It is more likely to be an output stage problem. The unit will be shutting down as a result if a DC offset in a faulty channel. You will need to isolate the problem somewhat to diagnose what is going on. Do you have a multimeter and a decent knowledge of electronics? If so, then I can talk you throiugh some things to check. If you dont think you are up to it, I would take it to a HiFi repair guy for a look.

It may be more worth your while to buy a refurbished unit here for $132.

I am more than happy to answer any other questions you may have about it, just give me a hoy :)

Thanks for using FixYa, If you consider the advice I have given you as sound, a FixYa rating is a great reward for my efforts to help you. Cheers.

yes mate. Quick lesson on checking transistors.
Check between the middle lead(collector) and either side. if you see low ohms anywhere, this channel will be the one down. . AFTER you have isolated the problem channel in the amp check power supplie/rectifier diodes for shorts also, remeber that there may also be more than one channel shorted. Pays to check em all if you re unsure before ordering parts.

Lift middle and right hand leads off the PCB for each outputs(looking at the lead end). Desolder with a suction pump or wick.

    1. base(still soldered down)

    2. collector(middle leg)

    3. emmitter (right hand lead)
measure with a diode checker on your most favoured meter
1-2, 1-3 then swap the leads around.
you should get a reading of between 0.5 and 0.6
measured in one direction and nothing in the other(leads swapped red for black).

then measure as follows for zero leakage.
2-3, 3-2, then swap leads RED to BLACK and check again.

To check drivers I always remove from cct, check emmitter resistors, and any diodes about the output stages and driver stages. Check any low value resistors you can see on the board.

let me know how you go

    regards
    robotek

I have a Rowe R80 jukebox and after moving it it has no sound through the speakers I am in New Zealand

Well, in addition to all the fine suggestions that are here, I would like to add the simple and easy things that may have happened during the move.

IF YOU ARE NOT GETTING A LOUD POP WHEN THE MACHINE IS POWERED ON.......

1) Make sure that the wires on the terminals below are still connected to the screws. There is one ground and one each for left and right. The lower the tap the lower the (max) volume of the jukebox. If they are not connected there will be no sound.

There is a jumpers on the terminal strip where the volume control connects. Make sure that these connections are correct and tight. Also make sure that the jumpers did not fall off.

If you are getting the loud pop in the speakers when the power is turned on .....

Check the plug on the side of the mechanism, just below the back of the tone are.(looks like a little tube socket) Check to see that it is connected to the mech and the CORRECT PLACE on the amplifier. It mat be possible to have this end in the wrong place. bf77613e-82a3-4e37-b8fe-cc80f4d4dbcb.jpg

Check all all your connections against the pic.

I hope this was helpful.

Sound problem with JBL Creature II

I had a problem with the speakers not working properly. The green lights lit, but the amount of sound coming from the speakers compared to that of the sub was much lower.
I decided to take it the speakers apart.
I found that the magnets on the speakers had moved forward slightly in the plastic cage they sat in. I pushed them back as far as they would go, and Hey Presto! working again!
I hope this helps someone!
