Panasonic DMR-XW300. Have been away for 7 months all power off worked perfectly the first day next day sound only no picture. Is it worth fixing or do I buy a new one.

DMR-XW300? sounds like a late 2011 model; either way it's more than 5 years old.

I have 2 DMR-XW390GLX units bought new in 2012-13 - still working today. Even the HDD's in them are still perfect - but that's just pure luck and they're over 5 years old as well.

I'd recommend you replace the unit with a new one of similar brand - with a bigger HDD (e.g. 1 or 2 TB), Blu-Ray/DVD recorder, and all the features your existing suspected faulty model has.

The cost of repairs is usually greater than the price of a brand new unit in the box. Besides which, some service workshops charge a fortune and often leave customers without their products for several weeks or even months. Delays like those are generally not welcomed by many people. No one likes waiting a long time for a result.

5 years is the typical expected lifespan cutoff point for most modern manufactured items; fortunately extended warranty plans may be offered for some models/brands. Nothing lasts forever (though we wish it did).

I do suggest you put the faulty unit aside for now - especially if it has a working HDD in it.

I shall leave this one up to you.

DVD disc is stuck in Panasonic DMR-XW300 DVD recorder but somehow child lock is showing. Cannot unlock child lock!

Try pressing and holding the OK (the center button in the arrow key section) and Return (on the lower right of the arrow keys) buttons on the remote control at the same time. You should see the X LOCK message disappear. (Holding these two buttons will toggle the lock on when it is off.) This is shown on page 89 of the manual which is available from Panasonic on the product site: http://www.panasonic.com/au/support/manual-download/players-recorders/video-recorders/dmr-xw300.html . The direct link to the manual is http://www.panasonic.com/content/dam/Panasonic/support_manual/DVD_Recorder/English/rqt9135-l.pdf .

If you are using a universal remote, the code currently in use may not match this feature. Try the original remote if you can. A replacement remote that should match all of the features is here: http://www.tvremotes.com.au/panasonic-remotes/original-panasonic-remote-control-n2qayb000273-dmrxw300gl .

I hope this helps.

If your recorder has a pinhole on the bezel / face-plate, this has a manual eject lever inside.
Straighten a paper clip, push into hole, then press inward firmly to push the eject mechanism.

Look for a tiny hole in the cover of the Disc drawer (about the size of a pencil lead). Straighten out a paper clip and push it into the hole - should mechanically release the drawer so you can retrieve the disc.
