Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
Out of the blue, our very old Spacemaker II (circa 1986) started running by itself. The display reads "8 lo code", and the keypad is inoperable. When the door is shut, the light is on and it sounds like it is running (fan), but it is not actually working (nothing is heated). Model number is JEM31E001. I know it is very old, but has worked fine to this point. Just curious what is going on. We are not the original owners, so do not have the manual to troubleshoot.
This is usually a shorted keypad or a problem on the control board.
We regularly repair these for customer nationwide for only $39.95, plus parts cost if a keypad is needed.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more help.

Tips for a great answer:
If the microwave runs for a few seconds and then shuts off, a door switch might have failed intermittently. Check each of the door switches for any signs of overheating, arcing, or burning. Also check each of them for continuity. Replace any of the switches that is visibly damaged or that only has continuity intermittently
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad and
control panel might be defective. There are several other components
that can cause this problem, be sure to check any other components
before replacing this board.
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad might be
at fault. This is not common. Generally speaking, if the microwave
display is working and some of the buttons respond correctly but
some don't, the problem is with the touchpad.
