Question about GE Refrigerators

1 Answer

I came home tonight and there is like a burnt industrial smell in the fridge and the things in the freezer are defrosting. I was only gone for about 2 hours. The fridge does not seem to be running. It is a side by side and only about 2.5 years old.

Control board has gone bad....

What happens is the defrost is controlled electronically from a circuit board, when this goes bad, the freezer quits defrosting, and freezes the fans that circulate air through the fridge side of things.

To check this, unplug the entire fridge, leave the freezer open, wait for it to defrost a bit, if this causes the fridge to start cooling again when you plug it back in, then its the defrost. You should also see ice crystals on the back of the freezer just under the icemaker.

Whirlpool SXS.....1. compressor cooling fan quit so fridge and freezer stopped working. 2. replaced cooling fan and fridge and freezer working again. 3. Now the fridge and freezer works but runs nonst

Check to see if the sensor in the freezer compartment is encased in ice. If so, do a complete defrost and restart the unit. Another possibility is a bad thermostat and/or sensor.

the banging and crackle noise can be from the defrost element in the freezer side as it heats up it melts the ice on the evaporator it can be a bit nosy. there shouldn't have a burning smell tho get it checked out

Phillips whirlpool built in fridge /freezer smell coming from the fridge section,we have tried various things but the smell still persists

Could it be that there is degradation of the plastics due to heating of the defrosting coils or is it the smell off leaked gas.
Remove all the food stuff from the fridge and clean, wash the inside throughly. Now restart the fridge and after aboutone hour check for smell, continue this till you notice, if the smell comes in after about 10 hours then you must look into the defrosting heater for any traces of material on it causing the smell on heat.

A burnt plastic smell indicates a failed component. Start where the odor was the strongest and locate the failed part. The hard part is determining the reason for the failure as just replacing parts will not correct the problem. Look at the start relay on the compressor or the defrost components.

sounds like the defrost thermostat is the problem. since it's located in the back of the fridge, behind the access panel, i would have a technician look at it.

THE FRIDGE OF MY FRIDGE FREEZER HAS STARTED TO FREEZE UP

is the fan running if so suspect a stuck timer, thermostat (cooling)

if fan doesn't run suspect defective defrost thermostat(some manufacturers wire the fan with them) or a bad defrost element if you see glass chards or burnt smell in freezer section.

thats all i can think of now. hope to se of some help

Refrigerator Smell

Is the problem more in the freezer than the fridge section. If it is it is possible that on a defrost cycle the heaters which warm the coil may have warped and ar heating something they shouldnt. Another possibility is if there is something in the condensate tray (where the water collects) or something touching the compressor which runs very hot, or even the compressor relay if it is a 'plastic' smell. Smells are notoriously bad things to trace as engineers normally turn up when the smell is either gone or so faint as to not to detect. All I can suggest is trying to narrow the search area as much as you can and hopefully youll find it. Hope this is of some help.
