Unplug unit from the wall, remover the start relay from the compressor and shake it. If its solid possible bad compressor, if it sounds loose (broken part) then most likely bad relay. Verify your model number as you are missing some letters.

Good Luck

Whirlpool eet171pk relay switch

do you mean the compressor won't start and you hear a clicking sound every few minutes?if so most likely the start device on the compressor is bad,you have to send the model number off of the machine,if it's a bottom mount or side by side, open the fridge door and look on the right side wall up near cieling and you'll see a tag with model and serial numbers,if the freezer is a top mount open the fridge door and look on the left side wall up near cieling and send model number so someone can look up your machine.have you vacuumed out the coil,if the coil is filled with dust the machine will run hotter than normal and can damage the start device and the compressor.

My whirlpool fridge freezer keeps making a clickin noise like theres an airlock wot can i do to stop it?

Hi and wlecome to FixYa, I am Kelly
First off unplug it for about 15 -20 mintues. If there was a momentary power loss the compressor may be in a high coolant pressure fail to start situation. The high side pressures are well in excess of 150 lbs and the coolant system needs to stabilze for about 15 minutes so that the compressor does not "dead head." The clicking sound your hearing is the start winding trying to start the compressor. If it does not reach full speed in about 45 seconds the Klixon thermal overload will cycle and there will be a 4 - 5 minute pause before you hear the clicking again as the compressor again tries to re-start.

After unpluging the unit and then restarting it... if it does not re-start then there are a couple of things that can cause this.

1. The PTC relay mounted on the side of the compressor has failed.
2. The run capacitor has failed.
3. The compressor has failed and the internal rotor has LOCKED.

Unless your electric bill has been steadily climbing over the last few months I doubt that the comressor is locked,

Since you did not include a model number this is a GENERIC response without any parts links for the PTC relay or the run capacitor. If you need help with parts or further troubleshooting please provide a complete Model number in any future responses.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Knocking noise coming from bottom of refrigerator

check the compressor for operation adn check the fan in the back of unit to make sure it is running...whirlpool units are notorious for compressor relay failure normally they click in and out every few minutes... if it is a knocking noise and continuous make sure compressor is not trying to start and sitting there shaking... normally it will stop after a few minutes and then start again....

Fridge not getting cold, making clicking sound - Whirlpool EDSFTG

remove the rtc overload off the compressor and shake it,if it rattles thats your culprit, also if when its running and the compressor is quite warm to the touch, its only running on the start windings and isnt actually running right and will overheat and ruin the compressor, replace the rtc its cheaper than a new compressor

The clicking noise may be the overload located at the compressor. If so the compressor start relay, start capacitor and overload may need replaced. Have you noticed any change in cooling or freezer temperatures? Sea Breeze

Compressor on whirlpool side by side

I hope you have not ruined the compressor by now. Your original problem was that your compressor start relay assembly was bad. The click noise you were hearing was the overload protector preventing damage to the compressor. When you bypassed this relay and overload protector you may have burned the windings of your compressor. You would need a compressor tester or you will need to put a good relay overload assembly on to see if the compressor is usable now. If the compressor is destroyed the repair bill could run from about $350.00 to $700.00 depending on model and technicians labor charge.
I hope I have helped, supertechks
