Hi,

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

If your dryer works but no heat

whirlpool, kenmore, roper, kitchenaid, inglis,if your dryer works but no heat most of the time it is a blown fuse,or bad heating coil, cause of a blown fuse can be power surge, clogged wall vent, clogged dryer lint vent box, unplug, remove back cover, look to your right and you will see the heater box, look on the left side near the top and you will see a small fuse, this is your heater box fuse,if not the fuse, the heating coil is near the bottom,1 screw on each side, remove and look for broken wire,if you have a meter, you can check the fuse and heater coil-mike

Dryer does not heat up

Unplug the dryer. Look for blockage.4b24ab7.jpgIf you have air restrictions your heater element might be OK. 142c967.jpga4caa20.jpgIf all these components check good and you still don't have heat you might have a timer problem or an electrical problem. The timer has a leg going directly to the heater element. The load is high and overtime the contacts inside that timer get burntc97b4dc.jpgAnother thing it could be it the breaker. The motor runs on 120 volts. The heater however runs on 240 volts. If the breaker is worn on the heat load side then the dryer will work but their will be no heat.7e5d468.jpgIf it turns out to be a limit instead of the heater element then clean out the dryerd60b014.jpg8006b2f.jpgb57aa0b.jpg0fe9a0b.jpg3aea907.jpg2b993f6.jpgService manual for kenmore

About heating problems

I must assume the dryer does NOT heat.
** UNPLUG a dryer before attempting ANY repairs. Lethal!
Check this website before you start
A dryer heater is controlled by the timer, a thermostat and a high-heat safety switch. The thermostat and safety switch are mounted on the housing around the heater.
Most likely - If the heater is blown, a visual inspection inside the heater housing will see a loose heater wire. Just order the heater.
Next likely - Thermostat problems occur. I replace the thermostat and high-heat safety if either are suspect. Cheap, easy fix. A tech person with a ohmmeter can measure if the high-temp safety is open (it always reads shorted when it works) A thermostat also reads shorted if the heater is cold.6d28571.jpg
Least likely - Controller failure. This can be expensive ($80 - $400) so consider if you want to spend the money. A controller is actually fairly easy to change. Buy a new knob as you are likely to break it without experience and special tools.

No heat, but dryer turns.

There are three common causes of a dryer not heating. First is a busted heating element. Second, the thermal cut-off has blown. Third, the high limit thermostat is not working.

Disconnect power to the machine and remove the screws at the bottom of the lower front access panel (toe panel) holding it in place. Pull the panel down and off the cabinet. You now have access to the heating circuit.

Remove the heater shield by removing its mounting screw and pulling it off the heater housing.

The heater terminal block is located at the left opening of the heater housing. Disconnect the wire from one of the heater terminals and measure the resistance of the heating element using an ohmmeter set to X1. The resistance should read 7.8 -11.8 ohms. Replace the heating element if the resistance reads open.

Disconnect the wires from the terminals of the heating element and remove the screw securing it to the heater housing. Slide the busted heating element out of the housing and install the new heating element. Secure it with the screw and put the terminal block in place. Connect the heater wires and reinstall the heater shield.

Slide the lower front access panel up into the cabinet and secure it with the screws.
