Question about Bosch WFK 2401

1 Answer

Hi - Our Bosch WFK2401 washer wasn't spinning. As per other suggestions on this site, we replaced the brushes. The old brushes were quite worn - one was worn down to the brass. Unfortunately, the drum still won't spin. We've also made sure the trap is clean and did that before we replaced the brushes. We've also re-run the diagnostics (Result = 08). Does anyone have any suggestions? Does the fact that the drum still won't spin after replacing the brushes suggest it really is a motor issue? If so, we'll be getting a new W/D set as this set is 9 years old. Thanks!!

Actually, my husband noticed when he put the brushes in that one was easy to put in, and the other was very tight, almost to the point of obstruction. He filed a very little off the long side of the "tight" brush and replaced everything and voila! it works!

My husband actually suspected it was a brush contact issue. The one brush didn't go all the way into the slot as easily as the other, so he very lightly filed the stubborn one and now it works! Therefore, if there's anybody else who replaces brushes, we suggest ensuring there is contact before you abandon this potential solution.
    Thanks!

The fault code is actually speed sensor fault. It happens when no speed is detected by the motor control through the speed sensor. It is either a motor winding is open, harness connection to speed sensor and motor is broken, motor control is at fault, or the speed sensor itself is at fault. Check the continuity of the motor windings, speed sensor and the harness. If all of these turn out okay, then the motor control is the one at fault.

The tight brush didn't go all through to make the necessary contact.

Plug off the power cord from the wall mains. I give you several alternatives, sort out thru the easiest: Note your brand and model. Check on YouTube for change of motor brushes. Then disconnect your motor and check your brushes; follow noting how you dis-assemble so you can re-assemble easier. If your brushes are less than half an inch long get new brushes (thru this very site Fixya) and refit; actually this is quite easy. The spin has a lot to do with worn motor brushes. Manufactures want you to dump machines and buy; it helps them all. Not you - you shell out bucks.
If you have already cleaned out your filter, which is usually just under the tub (be prepared for a lot of water; and disconnect from the wall power socket), your washer still may not spin. So look into next para below. The tech sheet is usually taped to the body of the washer inside somewhere.

Check the motor housing for an overload button, usually on the back and coloured black or red. Give it a push and if it clicks then the motor might have just been overloaded and shut itself off.
There is a big connector located at the motor - giving power to the motor (located under the tub) to the right side, could be loose. Disconnect the connector and refit to make sure it is tight. Before refitting the back, etc, try the spin alone; if it works you are done.
Click if helped pl, at my solution. I am doing this for the enviro. (& you)

Bosch wfk2401 fault 08

Most likely this means you have a belt problem, or the brushes have worn out. If you are confident, UNPLUG the machine, and remove the back cover. It will be obvious if the belt has come off, and you may be able to re-instal the old one, or buy a new one.
Worn motor brushes will be less obvious, but if you're reasonably confident with electronics, you could remove the motor, and inspect the brushes, or get someone else to.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

It does sound as if the motor requires replacement. It is not uncommon to find that the brushes are worn sufficiently for them to not make perfect contact with the commutator.
Now, a word or two of advice from this old hand- it might be suggested that just the brushes on the motor want changing; experience (of others) suggests that they may only last months rather than many years UNLESS the motor itself is refurbished. Refurbishment includes skimming the commutator on which the brushes run. Without skimming the brushes do not sit cleanly on the commutator (like the worn ones!), often causing excessive sparking and excessive wear on BOTH. Alternately a new motor! I changed the motor on our 19+ year-old Bosch at a cost of GBP250 ;-0(
The choice of course is entirely up to you- but do not forget that it is not an uncommon fault, especially if the washer is not exactly new. Others I have given this advice to have chosen new brushes and I don't blame them!

If this has assisted you please consider a 4 thumbs up for the rating.
Thanks and good luck!

We have a Kenmore washer. It does everything but will not spin. At first it would spin if you gave it a boost. Now it does not spin at all.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

It does sound as if the motor requires replacement because it is struggling, particularly when called upon to run the spin cycle. It is not uncommon to find that the brushes are worn sufficiently for them to not make perfect contact with the commutator at the higher speeds- bouncing and sparking. My Frigidaire Model ATF6700FS1 does not spin unless it is empty? The belt was replaced once under warranty already, but now the machine is two and half or three years old.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

Sorry for the not so good news but it does sound as if the motor requires replacement because it is struggling, particularly when called upon to run the spin cycle but your washer is not that old and well used.(Our Bosch was 18+ years old when I had to replace the motor- not that that helps you at all!)
