Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Vanguard V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 23 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 386777 - 0036 - E1

1 Answer

My briggs vanguard v-twin 16hp after initial start up this fall started leaking fuel from the carb into the cyl. and into muffler. The jet is seated and not dirty. It leaks somewhere else in the bowl. There is a some sort of electrical part (solenoid?) at the bottom of the bowl that looks like it has a cylinder or piston that is not seated into what looks like a jet. any ideas?

The solenoid on the bottom is a fuel shut off solenoid to prevent backfiring if shutting down engine with the throttle still open. If you're leaking fuel into the engine, the float is not closing the needle valve in the carb. remove fuel bowl and replace float, and needle valve with seat.Be sure to blow out all fuel passages

The float stays afloat and closes the needle. I removed the float tested it for leaks and filled the bowl with fuel without the float in place. The fuel still leaked out of the bowl. When the float is in place the leaking bowl lets the float go down and then opens the needle valve and continues to empty the fuel tank. The bowl does not leak onto the top of the engine ( cracked ), but leaks into the intake, fills the cylinders and then out the muffler.??

Will not start. but if I pour gas in carburetor it will. stop after the gas is burn of carburetor

Could be that the needle is stuck in carb, or else the fuel pump diaphragm is bad. Check the pump, thats what I would check first.

Should go to the valve spring access cover. Is the PCV line and keeps engine from building up pressure internally.

To clean the carb you will have to remove it from the engine and give it a through cleaning with small diameter wires run through the ports and blowing out the gunk with low pressure air or WD40's little red tube. From your description, you need to do this as the ports are clogged and not letting proper amounts of fuel through to the engine.

good luck.

It sounds like your valves are out of adjustment. Your starter will bog down if it is out of adjustment and stop at the compression release.
So just take your valve covers off and set your valve lash to
.006 intake
.008 exhaust

My intek 18hp will only run with choke fully closed.please advise possible problem &solution .the throttle seems to have little impact on the running of the engine

Hi and welcome to FixYa. It sounds like the metering jet in the bottom of the carb throat is clogged.

1st turn off the fuel supply

You will have to remove the float bowl from the carb and then the BRASS jet / orifice. Once removed hold it up to the light.. you should see a pinhole of light thru the jet. No pin-hile = run only with choke. ALSO the nut / bolt that holds on the float bowl has 2 holes in it make sure those are clear.

Before you reinstall the float bowl turn on the fuel and catch it in a spray paint can lid or something similar. It should flow rapidly and stop as you GENTLY raise the float. If no flow then you have a stuck needle and seat or a clogged fuel supply line. Correct same and reinstall the filter bowl. It should run fine after that.

Thanks for using FixYa!

My steem pressure washer has a twin overhead cam briggs motor.... I cant seam to get fuel to flow into the nikki carb. Is there something missing? Like a fuel pump?

If the gas is higher that the carb it will not have a fuel pump. Have you unhooked the fuel at the carb to see if fuel is getting to the carb? If it is not you have a blockage in the tank or fuel line or a clogged filter. If fuel is reaching the carb you have a stuck needle.

Need carburetor adjustment

I had a similar problem with my 23 hp briggs. While cleaning the carb I found that the great gas we get today had eaten the seal around one of the jets in the throttle body causing it to fall out. Replaced the jet and now runs like a champ. Hope this helps.
