When you play the video back and get no sound are you doing this on your camera or on the computer? I have the same camera, and noticed that when I playback something I've recorded I don't have sound either, mind you I don't have static either. But once I've uploaded the video onto my pc the sound is there.
You have most likely dropped the camera or banged it against something while the lens was out. This situation causes the brass pinion gear to shear teeth off the plastic ring gear on the Inner Lens Housing. It may also cause the guide pins to jump their track.
If this is the case the repair bill usually exceeds the value of the camera and you are probably better off selling it for parts on eBay and getting a new higher resolution camera.
pretty easy to replace the screen, i suggest buy SD300 from ebay that has lens problem, but it is known for sure that screen is working, you might find one for $20-30, also look for SD200 you might find it cheaper and it uses the same screen as your SD300
