Unpluging during the power button is off may cause some software errors. If this is the case you just go to the nearest authorised service center and infom them about the fault. Say them the truth. They only can correct it.

I plugged in my Magnavox 50-inch Smart TV it sparked and turned itself off. I tried unplugging it and turn it back on and red standby light stays on

Fault to the main power supply regulator section. Either it will be a separate board, or the part of main board. Check and replace damaged component/s at its main power regulator [SMPS] section circuit. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts.

It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis rather than making "Surgery" to it; which usually will make loss for both money and time. Even though you can make it right, it will cost around an amount equal to the cost of a new board; including the cost of (spare parts + service charge) More to say, most of the spare parts to it will be difficult to get from open electronic spare part market. This is true to most of the flat panel TV power supply boards; irrespective of its brand and screen size.

Philips 42PFL5432D/37 - When turned on it makes a light squeal (hum) - no picture or sound. Turns itself back off after a bit.

How do I replace the on/off switch on the 50" TV?

Sounds like the knob to On/Off switch is broken. It is a very difficult to get part from open electronic spare part market; even though it is very cheap to buy. Contact the authorized service centre for Toshiba. They only can help you in this case.

Humming when no input in jack; works fine with rca inserted; worries me that somethings is not right even though works fine with RCA or XLR plugged in, right channel only

Sounds like it could be feedback hum. Is there anything near it that could cause a reaction when unpluged? Such as a turntable, cassette etc. If so move them and see if it goes away. Even then it won't hurt the amp. I think otherwise worry when there's a hum when they are plugged in. PS check any earth connections too!

Try to unplug the power for a few minutes and plug it back in. If it still not work then the main board has gone bad. Replace the board will fix it.

Humming sound ACX 1000 ultrasound. humming sound is continuous even though nothing is plugged in to amplifier, (ie;No instruments )qrjc@bigpond.com

try unplugging cables from the inputs, one by one and see if the hum stops. If it does its a ground loop, if don't it could be a leaky filter capacitor in the power supply

TV turns off by itself & won't turn back on til unplugged, then plugged back in

Well, first your model number is the 42 inch, but I digress...

I had a similar problem with a Viewsonic 27 inch, with the blinking power light on a failed power-up. It turned out that replacing the power transformer was the ticket. However, as I have the 50 inch Panasonic plasma, I know that the transformer is built into the set itself. I'd still suggest that this is what needs replacing though, as this is different from a set being on but having no picture.
