If there are no beeps, your computer is failing the POST. I'm assuming the system is actually powering up--you didn't say it doesn't.
I would disconnect all peripherals (HD, CD, any cards) and try to start with just the CPU, memory, and video. You could also swap memory sticks if you have more than one.

If it still doesn't start, I'd guess the motherboard is toast.

    toasted?, fried?,these are the things people say but are rarely fact.What they mean is:"I'd like to skip this step" or"try something new"!........ Don't skip this : After you have attempted post by clear CMOS try "Default fatory method of 1,empty board 2, w/proc. 3w/add Vcard&ram . no luck no problem goto.."bad caps forum" (just to check) THEN observe the caps that surround the Proc.,Ram,& chipset! mark down the rating of each ,Replace them (voltage is non-critical,MFD value ....ish!) these parts cost pennies! so if you like that board & collection of parts you hung together or want that board to post that will complete your entire universe , "This method has given me freedom of choice"(95%+P.O.S.T.!!) Ha!. beyond that :replace bios chip,or look for physically broken circuit trace line-wire,dry solder of component legs,exploded micro resistor, (even these are fixable) crack on multilayer board,.....Oh Oh !(2 layers or less is fixable!) Oh.! I hope this helps and it is valid across ALL brands of motherbord manufacturer. RGBNET9

Power on but no display

Does it say no signal? Does is beep correctly during POST(power on self test)? Usually the remedy for this is checking your vga data cable if its connected properly and if it is, check the pins, are they all looking fine? If not change the cable and try again. If the cable is attached to your screen permanently, try a different screen.

I have a dell studio 540 desktop, I need to restore to factory settings but my monitor will not stay open. It opens for a few seconds then immediately goes into power saver mode and turns off, how can

I see two things here, but need clarification;

1) Monitor goes to Power Saver Mode, then turns -> OFF?

Sure that monitor didn't go into Standby Mode?

2) Why are you performing a restore back to factory settings?
Pick up a virus?

Primer;
The monitor receives a signal. A video signal. The video signal comes from the computer.

If the monitor is NOT receiving a video signal, then the monitor will state No Signal.
This is for older monitors.

New monitors do not state No Signal anymore.
It's Power Saver Mode, or Sleep Mode.

If the monitor is truly OFF, the Power On button will Not be lit up.
Or the Power On LED light on the monitor.

Monitor power on LED is lit, or Power On button is lit?

Monitor is not receiving a video signal;

Use a monitor cable from a KNOWN to be working monitor, for a temporary test.
OR,
Use a Known to be working monitor, and it's monitor cable.

Need to find out if monitor cable is good.

Monitor cable checks out good?

Then problem is computer.

The two leading issues with desktop computer failure, is;

1) Computer is dirty inside
2) Power Supply inside computer is bad.

Please post back in a Comment.

No signal on monitor, vga tested and ok

Did you check your monitor with other system or individually. If it works fine in these conditions then the issue belongs to your pc.
First of all, you have to confirm that is it the problem of VGA itself or the motherboard. For this, you have to see that does system beep when you start it because system with beeps having the error and the beep sound with continuous or 2-3 beeps relate with different issues. I am going to write down the beep conditions.

1 short beep Normal POST - system is ok 2 short beeps POST Error - error code shown on screen No beep Power supply or system board problem Continuous beep Power supply, system board, or keyboard problem Repeating short beeps Power supply or system board problem 1 long, 1 short beep System board problem 1 long, 2 short beeps Display adapter problem (MDA, CGA) 1 long, 3 short beeps Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA) 3 long beeps 3270 keyboard card

When turning on computer screen states no signal, has worked fine for a couple years

Please check all the pins on the video cable and also try it with another PC to make sure it is not PC video card problem. Please post back what you find.

Computer not booting up

Could be one of two things:

1. Signal cable from monitor isn't hooked up. (either monitor end or computer case end)

2. Video card in the computer is damaged and not putting out signal. This is unlikely though as usually this will trip the motherboard into beeping when you turn the computer is turned on.

When I boot my PC up I get a blank screen and a message saying no signal then the screen goes into standby mode

OK, it's gonna be one of these 3 things :

1. The cable linking your CPU to your monitor might not be properly plugged or has been damaged. You should hence ensure that the connection between the two devices has been properly done and that the cable’s state is fine.

2. You might be facing a problem with your monitor if the CPU makes a single beep error sound when you switch on the system. You can check whether the problem comes from your monitor by testing it on another CPU. If you still have “No Signal” error displayed including the error beep, I would strongly suggest you to try to get your monitor fixed by a competent technician or to get a new monitor.

3. If you receive several error beeps when starting the computer, this might be linked to a graphic card dysfunction. You can refer to the motherboard notice or check that the connection has been properly set
