Question about Poulan Wild Thing 18" 40cc Gas Chainsaw - P4018WT

2 Answers

Bought a Poulan Wild Thing 18" gas chainsaw (P4018WT) secondhand from someone who only bought it to cut down 3 trees. It will not start. I know that it works, as the guy started it up and showed me how it works. It came with the manual, I filled it with gas/oil (premixed, 40:1) and bar oil. Read the instructions for that, then read how to start (prime 6 times; then, with open choke, pull 6 times; set to half-choke, then pull to start). Will not start. Even after several pulls. Have tried several times. Will not start. Please help! Thanks, Brian

Don't prime it 6 times.

Prime it once and try starting. Keep trying with one prime.

If that doesn't work, let it sit for a bit. And then prime it two times and try starting again.

If that doesn't work, try priming 3 times.

Then try half-choke with one pull only, and then move choke to run for the second pull.

The saw might have an on-off button

Prime it 6 times as the instructions say, pull choke all the way out..this will also turn your on/off switch on, when it starts go to 1/2 choke, after a couple of seconds give the throttle a shot which will shut the choke off, make sure the chain brake is on for the starting process

My poulan 18 inch chain saws blade turns but only cuts in about an inch and won't go any farther. It's two days old and worked fine cutting the first 2 trees down.

It sounds like the chain does want sharpening, it depends on what you are cutting ( type of timber, dirty timber, burnt timber etc ) as to how long before it needs sharpening, if the chain comes into contact with the ground below the tree it will lose its edge instantly.

Poulan has had a notorious carb issue over the past couple of years. Products roll off the line needing a carb adjustment right out of the box. One adjustment is covered under the warranty at a service dealer near you. Look up your closest dealer at poulan.com. This is not something consumer serviceable as it requires a special tool.

The spark plug is firing and is getting gas but won't start

It sounds like you have low compression in the engine. I would check the compression it should be 100 psi.

Chainsaw starts but chain does not move freely in running mode. flip the guard back and chain moves freely but will not cut because safety gaurd has been tripped.

Jammed pull cord on Poulan P4018 chainsaw!

There maybe a split pin holding the cover down over the spindle! Not too sure, but possible. Could be pushed down the centre, just a case of having a good look. Only really worked with Hurqvarna's and Makita's. Hope it helps. Good Luck
