Question about HP Pavilion dv9925nr Notebook

2 Answers

My pc shuts down just after booting up. Could not get it to power backup with or without the battery. The next day I tried and it powered up briefly as it went thru a chdsk routine. It started up after that normally for a few minutes and went down again after a few minutes. The power light will be on even though the laptop will not fire up and eventually it will go out. Any ideas - the Geek Squad folks thinks it is a harddrive problem. To test that theory -- I tried to start up without the drive installed. It would not turn on -- don't know if that is a valid test as I have never pulled a harddrive out and tried to bootup my laptop.

Without a hard drive, you would get a message telling you there was no bootable device.
Check the battery--does it do this stuff without the battery in the computer? If it starts normally, then it's the battery. Does it start up and run for a few minutes, then quit--but you are able to restart it after a few minutes just to repeat the cycle? Then suspect heat. Bad fan or dirty fan (lack of CPU cooling).
You didn't say if Windows actually starts. Can you boot it from a CD / DVD? Can you get to the system prompt and keep it running? If so, suspect a corrupt Windows system.

BTW--when doing a power check, be sure your adapter is putting out the correct voltage--~18 v.

The hdd is underneath the laptop.

very easy to pull out.once you have tried that then try the memory

it could be a dodgy memory.

Computer keeps shutting down itself on start up

The most likely cause is that you have picked up a virus in an email and unless you have a clean backup of contents all is likely lost without expensive intervention at very high tech level within Microsoft and even then it may not work. Can you boot to safe mode? If so, try to run spyware to seach the disk. I'm not optimisitic that you'll be able to boot to safe mode even.

Do you have the rescue disk that came with the system? Try rebuilding the system, although you may well perpetuate the virus regardless of using the factory rebuild disk because it is extremely difficult to delete even with multiple reformats.

My compaq nc6000 did not start up. The proplem happen when I shut down for 4 days. anyone help!

Leaving a computer switched off for any length of time shouldn't matter. I have had laptops that have not been powered up for 5 years and they power up without a problem once the battery has charged and the BIOS backup cell is replaced.

I would suggest that if you were to press F8 when it is booting up, just at the point when the BIOS menu closes and choose Safe Mode,. Get it to boot from there and it may recover itself. If it doesn't do the same action but choose Recover as an option and follow the prompts.
I hope that helps.

Powerbook Aluminum G4 15 booting up problem

The backup battery connects directly to the logic board. From the symptoms you are describing (rather clearly, thank you), it seems apparent that your logic board may be faulty.
There are two more things you can try.
1) Reset Open Firmware: Unplug-replug your backup battery, then boot the system holding down Control-Option-O-F. Your machine will boot into Open Firmware. Type the following commands, pressing the "return" key at the end of each one:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset all
Your machine should restart at this point. If it starts successfully, you should be done. Otherwise,
2) Reset the Power Manager. Turn the machine all the way off (no power). Simultaneously press Shift-Control-Option-power button, then release. (Do not press the fn (Function) key during this sequence.) Wait five seconds, then press the power button. If it starts successfully, you should be done. Otherwise, you will need to see a man about a logic board, which is probably not a cost-effective repair on a 1GHz G4.

Should my HP510 laptop work without a battery

Yes your laptop should power on with just AC power. The issue could be a loose connection for the AC power which caused the battery to stop being able to charge also. Unfortunately only solution for that if it is incase the problem is to open the laptop and have the power connector re soldered onto the board.

Yesterday my battery ran dry and the notebook shut down. It will not restart now, even with a charger battery and AC power. Do you have any suggestion?

diesha

In regards to your notebook not powering up what sounds like is happening is the system got stuck in suppend mode when the system lost power. So what you will need to do is remove the battery from the system and unplug the ac adapter from the system as well. Next hold the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds. The will clear any power the capacitors may have stored. After you have done this plug in the ac adapter only and try to power the system on. The system should boot. After it does power it down again. Next unplug the ac adapter and put the battery back in. Now you should be able to use the system normally again. Note you will need to charge the battery backup.

Let me know if you still have trouble and/or if you have any other questions.
