SOURCE: paper jam MFC 685 CW
Hello there
This may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you.
Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.
First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.
If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.
And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.
Please come back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one so I will keep on helping.

Hello ,
First, we will have to make sure the printer is properly connected to the network
If your IP address is not a valid one (all zeroes) or is an APIPA address (starting with 169.254.#.#) you will need to run the wireless setup wizard again as the machine is not properly connected wireless
If you had a valid IP address before changing anything, it means that the printer offline is caused by the computer not being able to locate the printer.
This is usually caused by the printers IP address changing.
Changing the boot method to static will make sure the IP address on the printer does not change.
Now we will have to make sure the computer knows where to find the printer.
On your computer, go to your start menuè control panelè printer
Here you should see your brother printer. Right click on the printer and select “properties” (If you are running windows Vista, make sure select “run as administrator” and then properties)
Go to the “ports” tab
Select “add Port…” and then double click on “standard tcp/ip port”.
This will bring you to the add port wizard, click next.
In the field for “Printer name or IP address” enter in the new IP address of your printer and then press next and finally “finished”.
Make sure to apply the changes.
You should now be able to print.
Thank you,

I have a Brother MFC 7840W and have struggled with the wireless features. Not sure how you have this configured but if wireless suggest you find a way to connect via LAN or USB...I cannot make mine work via wireless but hardwired works fine. To fix, I had to 'reset' the MFC (functions on the MFC itself) and then reinstall the software selecting USB as the connection method. Sounds crazy but once I did it worked.
this is a complex machine, without its documentation it would be very hard to figure out, so the install and setup guide is available from brother, its available here
http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Quick%20Setup%20Guide/QSG_MFC_665CW_EN_382.PDF
and here is the units operator manual, this will take you to it.
following the install guide is pretty straight forward and should result in a satisfactory setup.
