Ok, then is this converter a software program or a piece of additional equipment?

Actually this unit should burn a standard encoded dvd disk (if you select the mpeg2 standard, not AVCHD), that should be playable in pretty much every player.
If you have recorded in AVCHD you can copy the file on a pc and convert it to a compatible one. Unfortunately there are no free converters, you will have to pay for one of them.
Or you could just view them on your pc by using VLC.

I hooked up my GZ-HD3 camcorder to my CU-VD3U share station, copied all files to dvd-R and my dvd's will not play in ANY dvd player. How do I correct this?

It all depends on what file type your camcorder save video's in and what file types are compatible with your DVD player.

Many camcorders save files on a card as MPEG4, you have to check what yours does.

Its ok to write to a DVD but you have to make sure your DVD player can play MPEG4. If not then convert your files or save your files in a format your DVD player can recognise ie MPEG1 or AVI.

Finally, once you've copied videos in a format your dvd plays, make sure you "Finalize" the disk.
This means that you can't copy any more data, but it makes the disk readable on other players.

I have a jvc everio share station cd-v3 dvd burner but when using

Try burning a copy that is recorded at a regular resolution. I think the hd 300 records at its highest setting in blue ray quality. Try something like SD mode. If yours has it. I have a jvc hd camera and its set up this way. Hope this helps.

Share station says incompatible disk

The Everio ONLY accepts DVD-R discs, nothing else. I do not know why. I use the cheapest discs that I can find as I have found through the years that they work the best. I have had my Share Station for about 3 years and it works great.

Can't burn from jvc everio hard disk cam to the share station

The Everio only accepts DVD-R discs, and the cheaper, the better. I burned a lot of coasters for my cats to chase when I tried using the 'name brand' discs. I buy cheap off-brand discs and have no problems.
