Since the heater fires it sounds like it could be the bypass valve stuck open. The bypass valve allows some of the water to enter the heater, while the rest bypasses the heater and returns to the pool.

If the bypass is stuck open, or broken, it allows the vast majority of the water to bypass the heater and continue to the pool. The water that is in the heat exchanger will become too hot due to slow flow and activate the high limit switch, turning the heater off.

The bypass is located where the pipes attach to the heater and can be checked or replaced if needed fairly easily.

My wife said the pump timed off and the heater was heating. She shut the heater off and restarted the pump and now the heater won't ignite. The red light blinks three times and I am not sure how to get it...

The fan will continue to run for a few minutes after the pump turns off to purge exhaust gasses. If it was still heating you have a problem. To reset the heater, turn off the pump breaker for 30 seconds. After that you need a repairman.

Hayward Heater Problem ''AO'' error. H400IDH

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

It sounds as if the air activated switch the tube you mention attaches to is not working. Pull the two wires from it and connect them to simulate the switch closing. Start up the heater to see if you get ignition. If so, replace the switch.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

Service light on

I just had the same problem resolved, my mastertemp 400 would run up the temp to 82F and then cutoff, the service light flashes and then 50 seconds later the heater would restart and run for 2 minnutesbefore shutting down again and relighting in 50 seconds. Repeating until the temp setting is reached.

I had the pool guy out 3 times until he found a bad thermal regulator valve (kit #77707-0010). Once replaced the heater runs great.

He told me that it's my pool chemestry that is to blame, I had it checked (like I do weekely by me and monthly by the pool supply store) and it perfect??? I'm now questioning what caused the corroson and stop it from coming back?

I hope tis helps.
