Question about Gateway M-1625 Notebook

1 Answer

Good day. I have a Gateway m-1625 (reconditioned). About 5 months ago it started to give problems when booting up. When powered on the hard drive would be engaged & then it would shut off. After doing this for some time the "CAPS lock" & "Scroll lock" keys would flash, a beepig sound is heard and displayed on the screen would be "CMOS Checksum bad". It would say it is able to be booted from the default configuration. I would be prompted to hit either F1 or F2. F2 - is for changing the boot settings. When I do that and place boot from hard disk at number 1, exit & save changes the settings are not saved. When I hit F1 another screen comes up displaying the name of my network adapter (RealTek RTL8187B) saying "media test failure", "exiting PXE ROM" Since two weeks ago, whenever the computer is turned off it takes a very long time (12 hrs or more) to boot. At times it doesn't even boot up. Once the laptop boots & the OS loads everything works well. What is wrong? Is it the CMOS?

Check the BIOS version, if there is an update for it on the gateway site apply it. a checksum error in CMOS BIOS cannot be overcome and you will always have to deal with this issue if no bios updates are available. There is a slim chance that you can revert back to an earlier version.

Can you access your BIOS when you turn on the computer?

Somewhere in the BIOS you may have inadvertently changed the netbook to boot from the "Network via PXE" instead of from your local hard drive.

To enter the BIOS, you must restart the PC and enter BIOS setup or BIOS features by pressing Delete or another hardware specific key on BIOS screen startup.

From there, you should encounter a series of menus that you can navigate only with the keyboard... not the mouse. With luck, you will find a boot menu option that you can correct.

Make sure you save your choices on exiting and restart your PC. With a little bit of trial and error, you should be able to coax your netbook to boot from its internal driver.

SOURCE: gateway nv7915u error message i'm getting is

The error PXE-E61: Media test failure usually means the hard diskhas failed or the hard disk needs re-seating or the disk controller is faulty.First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.Next - to check if the harddrive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer cannot see itas an USB mass storage device and you cannot open the various folders and fileson this drive, then this confirms the hard drive is faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

I dropped my notebook about 5 feet about and when i booted the message was operating system failed.

First thing to do is determine the health of the hard drive. Enter the laptops setup on boot and see if the BIOS has a hard drive test utility. When you boot the laptop, look at the screen and find the function key (F10, F2, F12) that you will need to press to enter the BIOS. After that, look through the menus related to the hard drive and see if a test is in there.

Gateway t 1625 laptop not booting

If u can, try to reformat it, reason i say this simple solution is because u already had the laptop looked at professionally, and due to you're laptop being stuck at the windows screen, i see this happen on HDD swaps a lot. The HDD needs to be repair-formatted or fully reformatted to talk to the new mobo when switched out, try this if all else fails, i personally think giving this simple solution may fix the boot up issue, but do make sure ur friend who looked at your laptop hadn't reset ur C MOS and may of not reconfigured it, this may also be the main cause of boot up troubles so make sure everything looks fine in ur BIOS. Gabriel will have a more proper solution than this but i believe by doing this it may help u bypass ur loading issue

Gateway m 1625 operating system not found and its overheating

This means either the operating system on your hard drive has become corrupt and you will need to reinstall your operating system or, more likely, your hard drive has failed and you will need to replace the hard drive and the operating system.

As for your heat issue, use a can of compressed air and blow out all the vents on your laptop. This should help the heat issue; note that it is common for the laptop to feel hot as it is dissipating the heat from inside.

Thanks and please take a moment to give this solution a thumbs up rating with a solved solution as I answered your questions. Thanks.!

Gateway T-1625 Laptop won't boot up at all

It sounds like a motherboard issue. The fan spinning and the LED lights are running off of battery power. This indicates that power is getting to the system. You should look into replacing the motherboard at this point. Before you replace the motherboard feel your system to see if there are any really hot spots that would indicate overheating. If not proceed with the replacement. If so, let me know where the hot spot is.
