It's likely that your screen is "fried" (faulty) ... try to connect your laptop to an external VGA monitor, and see if the screen shows up (on the external monitor) properly. You may have to toggle the output display (device) from computer screen to external monitor ..using Fn+F3.
If it displays on your external monitor properly, it means your laptop screen is no good. You can replace the laptop screen, or just continue to use the external monitor.
If it does the same (blurry & different color, etc.) on your external monitor, then, your video card/module on your laptop is bad. This usually happens less often.
The cable is dislodged or you have a failing lcd.If you want to repair this yourself.Check online for a replacement cable and a Lcd too. Then you will have to open the Lcd Bazel to remove or check the cable.Make sure when you attempt this there is no power attached ,battery and Ac Adapter.
It is definitely a drivers problem. Some driver files have gone corrupt and you need to reinstall the Video/Graphics driver on your computer. Most probably the drivers would be in the Disk that you got with your laptop, else you can download the latest drivers from the Gateway website.
Nowhere: Only HP and IBM and DeLL offer parts schematics for their laptops. But if you take a look at some of those, you'll have a really good idea how to work on your Gateway, because they're all very similar.
Does it do this when it's running on just the battery with no AC ,or does it only do it when running on ac adapter ? If it only behaves this way when using the ac adapter, then the ac adapter is bad.
Can you hear your fan running in your laptop ? If not, your processor may be overheating(which would also cause problems like this).
However,If it behaves this way when running only on battery, then I would think you need to replace one or more of your memory chips (DIMM'S).
