Yes, and No.
A) It is an Internal Backup Battery that is similar in design, and mounting, as used in a desktop computer.
B) It is not a CR2032.
C) Yes you can replace it. I have confidence in you.

I would like you to download the Service Manual for the IBM R30-R31 series of laptops.
(Free, no viruses or any other malware attached)

On this page go to the third line, and the first listing R30-R31. Left-click on it. (In blue)
After you click on R30-R31, it may take up to 30 seconds before you'll see the first page.
(Took me 32 seconds with a medium speed DSL connection, just now)

If you are aware of the following, please disregard;

1) You can save this file to your computer so that you won't have to download it again, and will be able to burn it to a CD for future reference. Also you can delete it from your computer, and save harddrive space.
If you are not aware of how to perform this, and wish to know how, please post in a Comment.

2) In the top header of the PDF file is a blue Down Arrow. This is the Page Down icon. To the right of it is the page number box. If you know the page number you can get to it more expediently by;

A) Put your mouse cursor in the page number box, left-click once
B) Type the number of the page
C) Press the Enter key

3) The + sign in the top header is the Zoom In icon, the - sign is the Zoom Out icon.
I like to zoom out the view when looking at a specific area, or part. Otherwise I view at around 100 to 125 percent. (They usually automatically have the PDF file set to around a 300 percent view! {300%} I take it down to around 100 to 125)

To the left of the PDF file is the Bookmarks menu. It opens automatically, (By default), to the headings,
Preface, Contents, and ThinkPad R30/R31 Hardware Maintenance Manual.
Left-click on the + sign next to ThinkPad R30/R31 Hardware Maintenance Manual.

(Just a note*
FRU stands for Field Replacement Unit. A unit that the computer repair person can replace. If it isn't an FRU, it has to go back to the factory for repair)

Now scroll down to the heading ThinkPad R30, and left-click on the + sign to the left.
Scroll down to the heading 1070 Backup battery, and left-click right on the heading.
On the right you will see that the Keyboard has to be removed, and then you'll have clear access to the Backup battery.

Page 61 - Keyboard is their listing. The PDF file page is 67.

From me:
A) Remove ALL electrical power to the laptop first.
The AC adapter (Charger), and Battery.

B) Work on a table. I know how that may 'sound', but there have been some who post they worked on a bed, couch, or directly on a carpet floor. These are HIGH areas of Static electricity. (Consequently when working on a table with a carpet floor underneath, do not swing your feet. Just a tidbit of info)

C) Your body carries Static electricity. Movement of clothes, pantyhose, shoes moving across a carper floor, etc., generates Static.
Static will fry out (Short Circuit) the hardware components inside a computer. (Processor, Ram Memory, Harddrive, Graphics Card {IF used}, are a few hardware components)

You are about to 'pop-out' the Backup battery which is located in a holder on the motherboard.
Relieve your body of Static before doing so.

Touch the metal frame of an open desktop computer case, (Unplugged from power), or you can touch a large metal object sitting on the table. Example? Perhaps a metal decoration, large metal serving spoon, or similar.

If you leave your laptop in the middle of replacing the battery, (Or working on it), upon your return de-static yourself before touching the laptop.

Please post additional questions in a Comment.
If you find you cannot download the Service Manual, please post in a Comment, and I'll step by step you through it.

Strike Number 2 down. It may indeed be a CR2032. I think it is a smaller version though. You will know once you remove it.

hi, many thanks to the quick and comprehencive reply.
i've found the way to replace the battry, had to remove the two center screws marked with two arrows (each). those screws holds the keybourd. when removed it is posible to lift the KB (carefuly, there are wires that connects the KB to the MB, and now the battery is be easily replaced, its CR1220 (12mm diameter, 2 mm thick, the 2032 is 20mm in dia and 3.2mm thick), but both are 3v lithium.
    Again, many tnx cu Yaron

You're very welcome ns_elenberg, and thank you for stating the battery model number. I thought the KB could be tilted out of the way to access the CMOS battery, but wasn't sure as I haven't worked on this particular model.
Could I ask you to rate my solution?
    Thank you,

Replaced keyboard for thinkpad now will not POST

Generally the BIOS backup cell can be pulled from the battery bay, with battery out. It's usually yellow with old Thinkpads, but could be blue. Sometimes held in a clip, button cell (CR2032) sized.
Usually plugs into tiny white socket near to battery connector.

My thinkpad 600x boots but has no OS and it has two errors: one about the battery: error 173 and one about the internal clock: error 163 what can i do to fix this?

It needs a new motherboard battery, usually a CR2032.

Probably accessed via removing a plate of the bottom or the keyboard, best to consult your user manual first.

IBM Thinkpad will not hold date & time.

Replace the backup battery and run BIOS Setup Utility to reset the time and date. This will resolve the issue.

Hello my ibm thinkpad 600E will not come up. it says error 00161 and 00163. what do i need to do?

Do you know how to get into bios/setup?
Start with the machine OFF. HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE TO HOLD THE "F1" key. WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn the power on, and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1" This will get you into the bios "setup." You should check the date, bootup order, etc, and reset. I would check the "wire" you think you reconnected---you may just not have actually reconnected it.

backup battery = CMOS battery
According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set. Error: 161
(Dead battery.) 1. Go to Checking the Backup Battery
2. Backup battery.
3. System board.
Error: 163
(Time and date were not set.) 1. Set time and date.
2. System board.
