No, I haven't replaced the print head. Would like to try other solutions, if possible, as I don't think that would be cost effective. Since the printer was working fine, then suddenly wasn't, I thought that perhaps there might be software issues, etc.

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 17, 2010

I did the steps in the reset that you suggested. I am still getting the same error message and printer is not working. Thank you though. Anything else you can suggest. BTW, the alarm is not flashing, just steady.

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 17, 2010

Yes, from Office Depot, but I have never had a problem. Do you think this may be the reason for my issue?

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 17, 2010

I took out all cartridges, then did the reset again. Same error message. So now what, do I just give up?

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 17, 2010

Did that just now, and did it previously. Still same error message. Anything else. I am pretty sure that to replace the print head would be expensive, and not a sure fix. What do you think?

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 17, 2010

Thank you for your help. I knew it wasn't going to be an easy fix.

My Cannon MP830 printer is giving the error message "The type of print head is incorrect, install the correct print head." I have tried a number of solutions, reset the printer, cleaned the print head and contacts, and nothing has worked. Any suggestions of further things I might try?

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 17, 2010

Did all that and no change.

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 17, 2010

Didn't work, but thanks. Any other ideas?

Thank you for your help. I did all that you suggested, cleaned everything with alcohol and qtips, but no luck, same error message. So I guess, it is beyond my "do it yourself" expertise, and probably the most sensible thing is to get a new printer. Hate to be do it, but probably the best way to go?

  • sylvia_raymo Oct 18, 2010

Yes, although I would have liked to find some way to fix the problem myself with Fixya's help, I recognize that this is one of those problems that is beyond the realm. But I really do appreciate all the advice and will use Fixya again.

Hi,

This is a very common problem with this model. I encounter exact same problem. What I did was took out the print head and clean the print head with Q tips with alcohol. To locate and remove print head, follow the instruction at Canon's PIXMA MP830 website and choose the tab "Support & Service" type "rseating the Print Head"

You will be seeing :-

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=123&modelid=12804#SupportDetailAct

Basically, printer head is inner carton where ink cartridge sit.
Above link shows precisely how to remove the ink cartridge.

Above link's instruction says, Caution: do not touch print head nozzles

But, I just went ahead and clean the print head nozzles with rubbing alcohol soaked Q tips.
After completely cleaned and dried, I reinstalled print head, reinstalled ink cartridges,
closed all the cover. It went back working perfectly.

Sometimes a bad positioned printhead may cause this error.

If no luck, unfortunately this is a PCI bus error and is a Service Error Code. Typically this is an internal error on one of the ASIC chips on the logic board and can only be repaired by replacing the logic board at a Canon Service Center.

Note - On most occasions, replacement is a better option than repair.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

If all the methods that i mentioned did not work, that would confirm an internal failure.Considering the cost of new and used ( used printer - same model is available as low as around $60 ) - It is never a wise option to go for print head ( usually around $75 - $100 ) + labor fee or sensor replacement + labor + shipping ( as you need to return the printer to canon ) which would cost you more than the cost of the new printer.

It's unfortunate, however this is a consumer industry and not only canon, even HP and other manufacturers make these printers in such a way that there life is somewhat limited. They want customers to throw and buy a new one unless who would call this as ' consumer oriented products '.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Follow these steps :
Reseating the Print Head
1.Confirm that the printer is powered on and press the button. (The paper output tray will open.)
2.Lift the scanning unit (printer cover) completely. (The print head will move to the replacement position.)
3.Open the inner cover.
4.Remove the ink tanks by pressing the tab of each tank.
5.Raise the print head lock lever.
6.Tilt the print head slightly towards the front of the machine and lift out gently
7.Place the print head in the print head holder and lower the print head lock lever carefully until you hear a click.
8.Insert ink tanks into the print head.
9.Press the mark on the ink tank firmly until you hear a click
10.Ensure that all the ink tanks are installed properly and the ink tank lamps light red.
11.Close the inner cover and the scanning unit (printer cover).
This should help.

Hello, and thanks for using FixYa.

Have you replaced the printer head recently?

This is a dialogue, we can write comments to each other.

Are you getting this error message on the display of the printer or on the computer?

In any case perform a reset on your pixma.
    - unplug the printer or turn it off at the wall
    - raise the cover of the printer, then hold down the power button
    - while holding down the power button plug in the printer or switch the power back on at the wall.
    - while still holding down the power button use a pen to press down and hold the switch / sensor that gets pressed when the cover gets closed.
    - while still holding the switch down, release the power button
    - wait around 5 seconds and then release the switch.
    - close the cover
    - turn the power back on.

Below you will see a video of the same procedure.

Have you installed print cartridges from another maker? so they are not genuine canon cartridges but something else?

  • Ekse Oct 17, 2010

Would you happen to have kept the original cartridges that came with the machine? I'd suggest another set of cartridges - possibly try canons own cartridges.

Does the error dissapear if you remove the cartridges and then perform the above reset?

  • Ekse Oct 17, 2010

    Remove ink cartridges.
Pull up the gray print head lock lever on the left side of the print head holder.
Lift the print head out of the holder.

Clean the printer head and its contacts. Then reseat the printer head and see if it improves. You might have to replace the printer head if the error keeps coming up, but even that might not solve the problem for sure.

  • Ekse Oct 17, 2010

Did you clean the contacts? maybe a little rubbing alcohol and a few qtips could get it clean and possibly working again.

The print head costs around 40-90$ And its not guaranteed to solve the problem. and the seller probably won't take returns either.

Sorry I can't offer any further advice on your problem that would help.

You would need a specialist at this point who has repaired these machines, someone who has worked in a canon repair facility might be able to give you an answer what you would need to do to get the machine working again.

I'd suggest you give a call to canon and see what they offer. After all its a good printer, and I wouldn't just want to throw it away.

sounds like the print head contacts are getting loose or are dirty, try cleaning the contact pads, re-seat the unit and try again, to do this gently rub the contacts with a white eraser works good for this job. if this helps you, please provide some thumbs up. cheers.
