Question about Sony Audio Players & Recorders

Sony TC 330 reel to reel tape recorder. Tape will rewind and fast-forward but will not play. I think a new drive belt might be needed. How do I check?

Sony taperecorder TC-355 will only run in fast forward. when trying to play in any speed tape moder went into fast forward and would not play tape.

If the speed-controlled roller is not closing to pinch the tape when PLAY is selected, the recorder will play in a fast mode. You will need Isopropyl alcohol, contact cleaner, Q-tips a screwdriver needle-nose pliers and a steady hand to clean every moving part in that Reel-To-Reel and then lightly lubricate the moving parts.
While you are in there I would change the belts as well. Or send it to a qualified repair shop and pay $ 125.00 to $ 200.00 for same thing to be done. Take your time, it's just a big puzzle, make sure you video or document everything you remove so it goes back together correctly. Good Luck!

Why don't tape decks play?

If your X-10 has a separate drive motor for the capstan , it could be weak and in need of replacement.

The C-3X could have belt drive and the belts could be weak and in need of replacement.

What is the reason the tape won't play on sa-ak95

It may be the tape(s) themselves. Pre-recorded cassette tapes are usually no problem for most players, but many user-recorded tapes were of the C90 or C120 variety. These cassettes use much thinner tape in order to get the recording time. This can cause the tape, after many starts and stops and partial fast-forwards and rewinds to get tight on the reels. This will cause the tape sensor to think that the tape is at the end of the reel when it is not. Sometimes rewinding from end-to-end will help, but not always,

My tape plays but it rewinds and fast forwards extremely slowly or sometimes not at all. Could it be a drive belt problem if it plays tapes?

tapes themselves sometimes get tight. also...a weak belt could cause this. I have sometimes taken tapes apart and rewound them by hand, but tapping the tape fast and gently can loosen them but you'll have to open the tape protective cover or the reels wont turn

Sony TC-138SD cassette deck starts to play then stops after 3 secs. Same when trying to rewind/fast forward

It sounds like the belt is slipping or broken which monitors the speed of the tape movement. When you play or rewind the tape, it thinks the tape has reached the end of play and shuts off. You can try a different tape to make sure the tape does not have too much tension on it. If the second tape has the same result you will need to remove the top cover of the deck to inspect the tape drive mechanism. Make sure the belts and pulleys are clean and replace any belts which have glazing or cracks. If the belt is broken you will need to replace it with a compatible belt of the same length and width.

In order to maintain tape control and tension the reels always pull lightly in opposite directions during PLAY mode. The capstan moves the tape in the desired direction at a precise speed. If the capstan doesn't engage the tape BETWEEN itself and the pinch roller you'll get the reels battling over control of the tape. Check the tape routing.

I have a sony TC 530. Fast fwd and rewind work

You need to replace the motor run capacitor. It's a small aluminum can looking thing with three wires right next to the motor; they often leak paraffin wax into the bottom of the case when they overheat. Whether or not yours has leaked it's easy to replace if you can use a soldering iron. Search eBay for a Sony reel to reel 1.5uf 250VAC motor run capacitor - they're less than $15 and come with detailed instructions.
