Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Gateway NV52 that is a little over a year old. A couple of weeks ago it started to tell me to change the battery so I ordered a new battery. One night I turned it off and have not been able to get it back on since. When I took it in the shop it wouldn't do anything for them either. After doing a lot of research I'm beginning to think that the power switch is bad. I just cannot get it out of its housing. How do I get the power switch out of the housing so I can check the connections?

Where is the jumper located? Do you know how to get the switch out of the hinge where it is located?

Power adapter faults will often take out components on the motherboard as well, including the processor.

Gateway nv52 won't charge

It sounds like you either have a dead mother board or a bad power inlet. Did the machine work with the new battery while it was charged? If so, then the battery connector was good and the inlet was bad. If not, your motherboard could be dead. I've also seen where a bad battery connector would syphon off enough power to not power on the machine or charge the battery.

A couple weeks ago, after plugging my HP laptop back in after using it, I noticed that my battery did not start charging immediately. Since then, the power level in the battery has slowly been dropping...

Yes, you have come up with the right answer.

Most laptop batteries do well to last 1 year before they wear out. You have done very well to stretch out 3 years on this battery. Good work!

If you want some help finding a replacement battery, please reply with the full model number of the laptop and I'll track one down for you.

Thanks for using FixYa and Happy New Year!

Once you get the camera working again by the "shuffling technique", don't connect it to the computer again. Instead, purchase an inexpensive card reader and use it to download pictures from now on. typrice_31.jpg

Oil not lasting to next oil change. I have the oil changed every 3,000 miles at the dealership where I bought the car. For the last two years I have been forced to add oil before the 3,000 maintenance oil...

adding a little oil between changes is not unusual, depends on how much, are you checking your oil yourself ?? if not start !! check it in the morning once a week, if its near the full mark refuse anyone telling you to add, ( there are some stations that pay their employees more to sell oil) on the safe side put in a new pcv valve, its onle a couple of bucks

Gateway nv52 won't turn on

I also had this problem. I turned it off and it would not turn on. I found the solution. First, extend the laptop screen as far back as it will go. Don't just stop the screen at a ninety degree angle. My laptop screen pulls back to about 135 degrees. Now press the power button. It should start up.

Why do I think this works? Well...I used to own an older model thinkpad that had a short "male" connector on the screen, that when the screen was folded down would enter into a "female" connector on the base of the unit and trigger sleep mode on the unit. This is how the system could automatically hibernate when the screen was closed. The little male connector broke off, and I couldn't get the system to wake up, because the connection to tell the laptop that I had the screen up or down no longer worked. I couldn't even power it up. I had to take an ink pen and push the connector through the female end to indicate to the motherboard that I'd opened the screen before it would even turn on.

It appears that the same type of mechanism is built into the long BAR under the screen of the NV52 and somehow it can't determine when the screen is open or closed. If it detects that the screen has not been opened, it won't power up. This safeguard prevents the laptop from being turned on mistakenly while closed up in your laptop bag. Extending the screen back resets the mechanism and it should turn on. Sorry for the long explanation...
